Where would I find an assortment of digital (active/video) backgrounds, such as lights flashing, stars darting, Live Sporting Events , Concerts, crowd footage . . . and so on? Is there such a software package or are there templates already in the FCP suite (and ways to easily create such backgrounds)?

You can do backgrounds in livetype and export them to use - or you can see what royalty free is out there to use. footagefirm.com has some free footage for download, but no crowd scenes that i have noticed

For the graphic oriented stuff, you should check out Digital Juice products...they run specials all the time.

Just google things like "Stock video footage" - seems like you want a range of stuff, and it's a huge market that's growing every year - tons of stuff out there, from pricey sites like Getty images (who have some awesome footage) to the monthly-membership and pay-as-you-go sites. Not as overwhelming choices as stock still photos, but plenty is out there.
