Digital Audio Inputs

A lot of this discussion seemed to go between 16/48 vs 24/96--what about analog in only vs analog/digital in?

I would be very interested in having an optical audio in, in addition to the 4 ports of analog, so sound could be managed/mixed/ A-D'd externally but we get the benefit of striping it with picture. This way we only have one thin cable going into the camera for audio with all 4 chanels streaming to it digitally.

Leave the analog ports so ENG/documentary shooters still get analog in, basic mic control, but for features, where you would rather have the sound guy manage the levels, deal with phantom power/high quality A-D conversion, to me it makes more sense to just have him just send just the bits to the camera to write with the video rather than messing around with up to 4 chanels of line in to the camera.

Advanced on camera controls/higher A-D rates would be great, but I would rather "outsource" the entire audio control/a-d conversion to outboard sound gear.

Anyone? Sound like a good idea? Or is this already part of the plan and I somehow missed the briefing? :)

On a related thread I pimped for essentially the same topology you asked for. By giving us a digital input we can have the simplicity of single system sound with the quality of an outboard mix. It also means that Red can keep the costs down on the XLR taps, 2 decent analog ins are fine for most work anyway.

I don't know if it's possible but could you combine an analog and digital (AES/EBU) XLR input on channel 1 (via a Analog/Digital switch above channel 1, and switching to Digital would turn of the other three analog inputs.) and that would allow 4 channels on XLR cables, and at the sametime allow an external box to multiplex the 4 channels externally to a single AES/EBU signal and just go into channel 1 since it would be a Analog/Digital channel.

If it is possible--that would be amazing. You get the durability of XLR but the flexability digital in. Sounds like a winner to me!

very interesting ideas and im sure Stuart is listening. I dont know about an optical in, but a ebu or normal coxial digital in would allow a much simpler pipe into the camera with less cables.
