Tiffen Black Promists are (or at least were) the industry standard. Anything from a 1/8 to a 1/2 is worth looking at. They will reduce contrast a bit, soften the image without making it look out of focus and will give a slight halo effect around very bright objects or points of light.

I'm getting great results with the Tiffen Soft FX/3, if the effect is too strong for you, you can go lower like FX/2 or even FX/1. FX/1 is very subtle.
