Difficulty Capturing With Inexpensive Panasonic Camcorder

Hi Gang :Drogar-Shock(DBG):

I posted a query here last month about trying to avoid using my two DVX100B's for capture.
(Giving them a break).

I bought a good used PV-GS29 off Ebay and later realized it absolutely would NOT be recognized thru FW 1394. Not through a PC nor my G5. Luckily I was able to return the camera for a FULL refund.

Then I posted a query on the Apple FC Forum, and the guys had no clues. Although an experienced friend of mine stated the PV Series; PV-GS29 PV-GS39 & PV-GS59 all had very good tape mechanisms, (as good as more expensive models).

I did a little more research and discovered a post regarding the same problem with model PV-GS39.

Does anyone have any knowledge regarding 'known issues' with this series? (The problem of non-recognition)?

I have another opportunity in purchasing a brand new, (old stock), PV-GS39 on Ebay. I can probably get it for $100-120.
(I could also pick up a cheap Square Trade Warranty)

Naturally, there are FEWER DV models available because of the old technology, and I don't feel like spending $300-400 for one.

Thank You :embarasse

Enigmacode,
You probably thought of this already, but: Did you try another firewire cable? PV-GS39 in VCR mode?
Hope this helps,
Ken

Hi Guys

Thanx for your replies.

Cables, Correct Mode; these are fundamental, (thanks).

This series camcorder actually does not have a 'VCR Mode'. The PV-GS39 & PV-GS59 have 'Tape Playback Mode'. The manual clearly makes reference to using iMovie and iMovie HD. It's also clear in that it illustrates this VIA a 1394 Fire Wire Cable. However it NEVER mentions Final Cut, (by name). One would think if it's designed to be recognized in iMovie, why not in Final Cut?

Only drawback with this series, they are not 3 chip cameras like the GS320.

Although I can probably pick up a band new PV-GS39 for under $150, I'm still not sure about it. Perhaps springing for a good used GS320 might be a better idea since I'd rather mount that camera on my hood or door than use the 100B, and I'll probably get a closer quality picture. And of course using it as a playback deck as well.

Hi There

Thanx for the reply

I've actually solved the problem. Seems the used PV-GS29 that I bought on Ebay and returned for a full refund was probably the culprit. I later picked up a brand new PV-GS39 on Ebay for $100, even got a Square Trade Warranty for it. It works like a charm, and I like the fact that it's 'NEW' so I know my valuable tapes have a good chance of being captured properly. Now I can take the wear n tear off my two DVX100B's. Then I went out and also picked up a MINT PV-GS320 for $150. I use that 3CCD camera for exterior suction cup mounting outside my Jeep hood, door etc. The 3CCD's will help match the quality of the DVX (mixed together), as 'B' roll inside and out of the Jeep.

Thanx again

Most likely the camcorder you bought had a blown firewire port on it. There should be no reason a Panasonic PV-series camcorder can't be used as a capture deck. I've used several.

To avoid blowing out the firewire port, ALWAYS connect your firewire cable to the COMPUTER first, then to the cam. If you connect the cam to the cable first, you risk frying the port when you connect the PC end of the cable.

And it goes without saying, but once the cable is connected to both PC and cam, don't disconnect the PC end of the cable without disconnecting the cam end first.
