Differences of models and prices

I have been looking at the DVX100 cameras for a long while, every since I was in a production and got to talking with the cameraman about his camera and he started telling me about the DVX100 he was using.

I didn't have the cash to get a new one so I just watched eBay and the local classifieds and finally I see that a guy here in my town is selling a DVX100AP for $1500.00 He says it's only been used for 30 hours.

Is this a good deal and is there anything I should look out for in buying a used camera? Keep in mind I cannot afford a new one at this time.

Also when I started watching the DVX's all there was, was the non A/B DVX. Now I know there is the A and B. This model is the DVX100AP. Is this that same as an A model? I have read all the reviews that the A model is noisier than the older models were but if this is a good deal I don't want to pass it up.
I know this camera new was like $3300.00 so that is what is making me a little nervous about finding this so called good deal, (looks good to me anyways)

If I buy this camera and there is something wrong with it will Panasonic fix it under a warranty? Or does it have to be original buyer?

Any help anyone can provide this newbie is greatly appreciated.

It's probably not under warranty anymore. That price seems to be about the going rate for a used DVX based on my San Francisco Craigslist classifieds (there's a DVX100a going for $1700 right now). I'd shoot some tape with it and see if it works. I'd also try to make a 24 hour return period deal where if you put it through its paces and any defects show up, you get your money back. Buying from a guy you can look in the eye is way better than buying on Ebay in my opinion. 30 hours is as close to new as you're going to get.

Thanks for the info so $1500.00 is not the deal on the week like I thought but I do like buying from someone close by.

Now is the Model DVX100AP is that the same as the DVX100A model? Are they one in the same?

thanks again!

Yes, the DVX100AP is a DVX100A. I'm not sure what the P means. It might be a designation for the US market or something. The deal you're being offered is not a total giveaway, but it is on the lower end of the going rate for a lightly used DVX100a. I don't think you're going to get a much better opportunity to buy in the near future.

Thanks for the clarification. So I guess I am going to go look at it and if it looks new or near new and the clock shows 30 hours like he says I will get it.

I suppose I'll be back on the forum soon posting requests for HELP!!! soon! :)

Thanks again!

Yes, I would stay away from ebay to buy anything electronic related over $200. There are so many scammers who steal 100% pos feedback accounts so it looks like you are buying from someone with perfect feedback. What has happened is that it is a stolen account. You buy the thing for $1500 and pay with paypal and never get the item. Then you have to fight with paypal for six months to prove YOU are not the scammer!

We should not have to figure out "how much can I afford to lose" when buying this equipment. If you do buy on ebay, send a few emails with different tech angles of questioning before you buy so you can weed out the outright criminals. On the other side, I had a buddy sell a 10k piece of equipment on ebay and the funds got frozen in paypal and then they told him that the buyer used a stolen cc after he had shipped it!!! So, he lost his money AND his item. He has filed a lawsuit against ebay and paypal :(
