DTE with an hvx? what gives me all me the best options?

At the current prices I believe P2 cards are simply ridiculous. When you have only 8min or recording time before you have to offload to a computer or p2store (which takes 4min to offload) it gets very expensive as you hover in a helicopter wasting gas waiting to offload. What kind of DTE systems are available for the hvx that will function the same as a p2 card and allow all of the different recording modes to be used?

I've read that the FS-100 firestore has many issues and is not capable of recording "native." In my understanding the only way this really affects anything is that it cuts down on your storage space, but still allows you full use of the modes of the camera, framerates, etc. If all modes are still usable and you will get more than 8min of recording time then this is a viable option.

I've read a slight bit about the cineporter but am still slightly confused. Is this a HD that you record to via firewire? How does it get around the issues that plague the firestore? If harddrives are harddrives than isn't the firestore issue simply a matter of writing the correct firmware updates?

Has anyone been able to work with a prototype model of the cineporter? To be honest it looked rather cheap (cheap as in bad quality) on the website. Is this really something worth waiting for?

Well what about the firestores limitations? Was i right in my understandings of how the video streams are recorded? What about the issues with drop outs and such? Have those been fixed with firmwear updates?

There are lots of limitations.

But the point is, limitations or not, there are no alternatives. The firestore is the only choice, and will remain the only choice for the immediate future. Sometime around Sept/Oct the Cineporter will hopefully appear, and who knows if/when the CitiDisk may ever show up and whether it will even work, and there's also nNovia who may produce a product, but...

... so far they all haven't. The firestore, warts and all, is the only choice for a hard disk recording unit.

Your understanding of how the firestore works is basically correct, and they have issued firmware patches to fix the issues with dropouts. Perhaps current owners can comment on how they find the reliability of the unit right now; I believe BenB and nsoltz are both quite pleased with their firestores.

This would be great because I too would like to know the current status of the firmware issues. I have one (FS-100) on order and have been thinking of going with P2, but I cant afford it right now. Any user responce would be great!
