Difference between a kit len and samyang 35mm lens

Hi everyone,
i would like to know if there is a noticeable difference between a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and the Samyang 35mm.

I hesitate to buy the samyang 35mm since its a bit big in dimensions (but the smooth manual focus sounds really good)

I thought the Sigma 30mm could be also good choice since its smaller.

Thanks in advance,
Have a good day,

You will see a huge difference. The Samyang will be much more light sensitive and you can achieve a much more shallow depth of field.

But remember, a 35mm lens might not cover all situations. But it's maybe the most useful focal length on a aps-c sized sensor. And if you need wider you might get away with the stock lens.

If you could put some extra $, my advise would be to go for the sigma 18-35mm f1.8. I bought the Samyang 35mm to use it in low light conditions and it served me really well... until I bought the sigma. Its a much better lens (built quality, has AF, covers more focal lengths) and its just slightly slower...but since you were considering the canon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 (which I also have) constant f1.8 will not hurt you...:)
Another thing to consider is that the sigma is a more future proof lens! I dont know what camera you have, but the new AF system of the canon 70D will eventually pass to all the future canon models (they are putting it in the C100s now) and the sigma works really well with it...
Im sorry if I sound like a sigma salesman...but my opinion is that this lens is a MUST HAVE for everyone using APS-C cameras...

I like the Samyang because it makes my camera look cool. Its declicked, got cine gears, its sharp and just a joy to use.

Like I said, it's a faster lens, but I could post 2 pictures shot at the same f stop and you would not be able to tell which is which. Neither is a great lens. Both are low cost, with cheap build quality, and OK optical quality. That being said, if you need a low cost and fast 35mm, the Samy might be a good choice. I rented all the available samys to test before I purchased, but after renting, passed on purchasing. Also the Canon 18-55mm kit lens has IS which can come in handy. For what it's worth, I have a buddy that shot an Addy award winning commercial using the 18-55mm. If only needing to cover an APS-C size sensor, then the above mentioned Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 is of better optical quality than the mentioned Samy and Canon.

Thanks everyone for all the great comments and suggestions. Its highly appreciated. it is like a course
Have a great day

Good advice. The sigma 18-35mm f1.8. very well built, sharp and fast. The Tamron 17-50 f2.8 von vc is the other choice on a budget. Samyang looks good as well as long as you are willing to give up auto focus and aperture.

No stabilization on the sigma 18-35mm...however I think its not a problem on those focal lengths, especially if you re using any kind of support...

Thanks for the advices everyone.
Finally, i have bought a samyang 35mm already. The sigma 18-35mm look to be a sensational lens.

I think i need a longer zoom, how is the Canon L series 24-105 f/4 IS USM compared to the sigma 18-35 and samyang 35mm?
Thanks in advance

And to sum it up i would buy a tokina 11-16mm or a samyang 35mm for my wide angle needs.
What do you guys think ?
Thanks for any comments everyone,

Thanks for all the comments. Those are great suggestions.
I tried a samyang 35mm cine lens and compare to the canon 18-55mm kit, it is absolutely fantastic, a pure masterpiece

Have a great day!
