FS7: Difference between 2K Full Scan and Normal mode?

Only now finding a moment to install the new firmware and of course loving the new features. In my opinon, there are still some missed opportunities by Sony (at least with my style of shooting) but I'm pretty happy.

Question:

Assuming I'm filming in 1920x1080, what's the difference between setting the camera to 2k Full Scan v.s Normal Mode?

Also, I believe I know the answer, but just wanted to check if there was any way of switching from 2k Full Scan mode to 2K Crop mode with an assignable button?

Normal works like a switch between hfr (dependant on second setting there) and normal frame rate (full scan). 2k center is always center 2k full scan is always full scan.

In 1920 X 1080.. . you,ll get a much better picture from the 4K full scan (normal) down sampled image to HD.. than you would get from the 2K full scan,or CC for that matter.. 2K full scan is also more prone to artifacts..due to pixel binning.. as the OLP FILTER is for a 4K sensor..CC will not as your just using the center of a 4K sensor.. so a 4K OLP will work as designed.
Seems that 2K full scan is best avoided unless your shooting HFR and want s35 FOV .. in a location not prone to moire /aliasing

Thank you, I think you guys started answering my question.

I guess I was under the assumption that 2k mode was actually 1920x1080 (since the resolution setting says 1920x1080.) Is that not the case?

I realize that in 2k scan mode I can't change my resolution to 4K (I would need to select normal mode for that) but assuming I wanted to shoot 1920x1080 (so that I can film at 180fps for instance) is there any visual difference between me selecting normal mode or selecting 2k full scan? Or are they essentially the same thing if shooting 1920x1080?

as I know it.. when you elect HFR.. eg to shoot 180 fps.. the camera will default to 2K full scan.. pixels get binned and you lose some resolution.. the camera does this because it doesn't have the power to record HFR off the full 4K sensor.. you are also more prone to artifacts as the OLDF is a 4K filter.. but you are now reading off a 2K sensor (the pixels have got bigger) grouped into 4 I think.. to get around this.. on the F5/55 you can physically change the filter to a 2K one... which you cant on the Fs7.. or you can select CC .. your FOV will change to s16.. but you will not have the artifact problem because you are back recording off a 4K sensor.. but just cropping it.. no pixel binning(combining )..

Basically as i see it.. stick to normal for everything.. if you are in man made locations.. eg brick walls etc switch to CC for HFR.. if you are not worried about artifacts and want your s35mm FOV leave HFR at 2K full..

Ive never worked out what other situation you would ever set 2K full scan.. maybe someone else knows one ?

Full scan mode is indeed just a bloody confusion in the menu - I think you actually need it when shooting hfr raw out of the back box

not that that mode has any fans

2K is 2048 x 1080.. and is 17-9.. so not really alot more than HD 1920.. so after debayering you will have less resolution than HD derived from the "normal" 4K sensor setting.. Ive any had it requests once..and for no good reason that I could see.. maybe its only use is for HFR.. but I wonder why its even an alternative in HD mode..?

I dont know.. I found the greyed out usually has some reason.. maybe they just aways want to give you the option ..or there is something Ive totally missed..

Yep engineer logic says don't grey it out, like Standard profile is not greyed out either, they are both functional options. Operator logic says grey out (or at least 'alert') any functions that if you accidentally select will fook your shoot up.

I once shot a stills job with 'pool' kit and somehow the previous user set the camera to 1/4 resolution something I didn't even know the camera had. As an Operator I would either grey or red such options or just not include them in the first place.

Thank you Donny, I'm sure Sony could have thought of a clearer way of laying it out in the menu but I believe I understand the differences and application of each setting now.

But is the 2K Full Scan setting really giving 2048 x 1080 ? I changed to that setting and: 1) Aspect ratio is still the same 16:9, 2) When opened in Davinci and other software the file is 1920 x 1080. 3) Field of view does not change.

Ah old post.. yeah I dont know.. Ive only once had one request for 2K.. very early on when I got the camera.. on my F5 I thought it was 17-9.. it should be, if full 4K is.. and its a theatrical release aspect ratio..

Field of view will only change going into 2K CC mode.. i.e.making the sensor half the size..

Ive still only ever used 2K full scan for HFR mode.. when I wanted the full FOV of my lens and I didnt think I would have any moire problems from the location..

I meant the increase in horizontal FOV when going from 16:9 to 17:9. It does change when switching from UHD to DCI 4K. But the whole thing Sony made with the terminology here and camera menus is a mess...

ah ok sorry.. I misunderstood you.. its only a few more pixels I guess but 2K setting full scan should be 17-9.. shouldn't it.. I have an f5.. but I would have thought it the same with the fs7.. same sensor supposedly .. full 4K it goes to 17-9 for sure..

Agree ..some sort of Japanese engineer logic at play I think.. .. the Varicam LT menu is even worse..

For what it's worth to the best of my knowledge 2K (2048) full sensor 17:9 on the FS7 is a feature that is only available when shooting RAW externally via the XDCA-FS7. Internally the camera will only do 1920 x 1080 16:9 even though in 4K mode the camera can internally record a true 4k (4096) image. The FS7 specs list no 2K 2048 sensor recording mode in the full sensor setting without the RAW output option of the XDCA-FS7 attached.

Ok thanks.. maybe that explains it then.. a difference between the fs7 and the f5/55.. or Im just imagining I had 17-9 in 2K on my camera.. have to check it out..
