I jus got news today from Tisch School at NYU that they declined my acceptance to their summer program this July - August all because of a freakin point on my GPA...i missed it by .1 ....not like a 1.0...but .1

They liked my statement and recommendation letters...but .1 freakin points.

sucks...:(

Sorry to hear the bad news. However, now you're at another of your life's crossroads and you need to really think about your next step. Choose wisely, Grasshopper. :)

Yeah i guess

I'm thinkin...i buy a new DVX...make a feature length film this whole summer...edit to perfection then copyright...and distribute it amongst peers and try to get it into Tribeca Film Festival if I can get that far..

but maybe thats jus goin to far......iduno but im kinda lost now cuz i really planned on goin there this summer..

how many shorts have you made that have been accepted into festivals? Just in case you haven't made that step im sure everyone would say to go that route before tackling your first feature

I'm sorry you missed out by such a miniscule amount :( but.....I like your attitude on working on a feature length film this summer. There's a lot to be said about experience and "just doin it" vs. film school. You may very well be ahead of the game and gain more insight and knowledge by having not been accepted.

Wait list and/or appeal process?

Wait list and/or appeal process?

Sorry to hear that. Find out if they have a wait list or appeal process. Call them up, be very gracious, courteous and cordially ask them if they have a wait list or appeal process. I had two friends that got into a top-ranked university by going that route. Friendly and persuasive last minute lobbying might put you over the edge.

Go to school ANYWAY. Take a camera and document the entire experience. See how long it takes for them to realize you aren't a student. Maybe you could even take an exam or two.

The perfect documentary would have you completing ALL course requirements and showing up at graduation with documentary in-hand offering to trade it for a diploma.

I havent made any that have gotten into festivals..and the ones i do make arent good enough to be accepted...so im starting from scratch and making numerous drafts and improvements on some things im writing.

but the thing is....im a sophomore in high school...they said they accept sophomores depending if their statement is good, grades are decent and have exceptional maturity...to be honest, not trying to be cocky or anything..but i had like 8 different people read my personal statement and they all said it was flawless...my grades are in the B range area..and i miss the cut off by .1...and when it comes to maturity...im 16...depending who im with like friends i act stupid..but when im working for a client at parties or documenting some hospital surgery, im professional (i try really hard to be it)...and my teachers say the same thing.

But ive been workin on gettin into this school since March..and ive put off alot of days when i could of been doing something else i usually do.

but watever...I gatta figure something out...i cant even drive yet...nevermind get to film school...goin for my 6 hours driving sometime this month to get my permit.

I dont kno...i gatta let the jets cool before i start making any major decisions.

you dont need em man,

NYU didint do anyhting for me... i studied art. NExt thing i know im DPing stuff.... Go figure. If i were selling insurance now id be just as surpised.

I love Owen's idea. I had a friend in film school that never had the money to pay his tuition so he just showed up and after a little fancy talking he found that nobody even questioned him. I never asked him if he ever came up with tuition. I do know that over 6 months in he still hadn't paid and never had a penny to his name, so I would assume he's 11 years behind on tuition. :)

Of course this was Canada and they seemed nice up there. :)

Take Owen's advice. I'll by a DVD of that documentary.

Man, if your just a sophomore you'll have more opportunities to try again, if that's what you really want to do. If they're impressed now, just wait until you show up again, with another great statement, even better recomendations, and a GPA that blows your old one out of the water.

If you had gotten in, I would be more suprised than I am that you didn't get in. Colleges rarely do that for underclassmen. Don't stress, eye on the prize, all that crap.

Best of luck.

Sorry to hear that, Blackhawk, but sounds like you are doing and thinking about all the right things. I gotta chime in and say I agree that documentary idea from Owen is right on the money. And work on your shorts this summer. I know this kind of advice/feedback doesn't mean much when you're still feeling the sting of disappointment, but try to look at this as an opportunity rather than an obstacle, and if you can't get wait-listed, just try again next year. Carpe Diem, my brother!

that sucks about being so close, i hate when that happens.

if this is definitely what you want to be doing in life, then by all means go get a DVX and start shooting. it's just me, but i'd so some shorts instead of a full feature. it's easier to say "watch this 10 minute short" than "watch my full length feature" to get it seen, and you get the same valuable experience.
