Did you sell your HVX?

Just debating this question at the moment..."Do I sell my HVX?"

Have purchased a Canon 60D DSLR and am enjoying the advantages of:

  • interchangeable lenses
  • low light capability
  • mobility and weight (travel overseas with a family...becomes advantageous)
  • "grabability"....ie. it is just so much easier to pick up and just start filming"
So now I'm trying to think of a reason why I shouldn't sell the HVX...maybe...

* Auto focus
* XLR inputs with phantom power (A H4n helps cover this to some degree)

Unfortunately the camera seems to have lost about 2 thirds of it's value in the time I've had it...ie. bought it for about $8000 AUD....I'm not sure if I'd even get $3500 AUD for it.

However even this money would straight away let me buy 2-3 high quality lenses and a H4N for the 60D.

What are your thoughts?
Any else had this debate?
Have you sold your more traditional professional cam...and moved entirely DSLR...or is it still worth keeping this to have the best of both worlds?

I just sold mine, but I replaced it with a Sony EX1R even though I use the 5D for about 90% of my work now. I can't see living with only a DSLR. It's too risky. It's still not a bad time to unload the 200, but don't wait too long.

I almost sold mine in June but kept it. Since then I've made enough to buy... uh, at least 6 more hvxs. It seems like a lot of people sold there's yet it still has a market, which I can take advantage of. Of course that depends on your clients. Regardless, I'll probably buy an AF100 next year and still keep my HVX for lower budget projects. The HVX has lost so much of its value that I figure it's worth hanging on to for the odd jobs anyway.

Nope, I dont think I will ever sell mine. Well unless I upgrade to something similar. It has uses the DSLRs dont. Dont forget servo zoom too.

I use my HVX just as much as my HDSLR, but I also film action sports, so you can see how that would be an issue using a detachable lens sometimes.

i've got an hmc150, no way i'd sell it. it still makes money. and i see my 7d as almost a compliment to it, not a replacement.

I work still a lot with that trusty old girl.
In the moment and over the next months, I shoot the BTS of a feature film with her.
She still gives some wonderful images if in the right hands.

Will I sell her?
I wait to get my hands on the Drama - if it does what Otis says, the Drama will probably replace the HVX.

Thanks for the replies...much appreciated...

given I spent so much on the camera it feels a bit of a shame to just sell it for a third the value...but in my early days with the 60D I'm just finding it so much easier to film with... the mobility aspect, the slightly "invisible" nature of a DSLR and the low light/natural light capability....

The sale of one HVX would pretty much buy a Tokina 11-16 or Canon 10-22, a 24-70L or 17-55 EFS and a 100mm macro lens + a H4n...some very useful gear given my only good lenses at present are a 50m1.8 and the 70-200 f4 L

But then the HVX is still a good camera...and will be for a long time to come...
