Did you guys see the new brochure!

barry hit the nail on the head.. as usual. You need to think of the non-tecnical advantages, such as overcranking the camera or undercranking the camera and getting your talent to do things off speed. you cant do that in post.

and Stephen, 20 years ago? Im amazed what NLE's and DV cameras can do now that they couldnt 5 years ago, hell even 12 months ago.

I've been around a while....

So this all refers to fast motion...what about the reverse optimum (slow motion), or is it the same? I've heard from several people here that the best results to get slow motion are to shoot fast and down it to 15 FPS.

The variable frame rate will aid in the fast effect, but will it help in smoother slow motion instead of having to use the NLE for it? I thought I've also heard the you can see slow motion in the vari cam right through the viewer.

Although film and video work differently, in general the faster the framerate the slower the slow motion. I'm not sure where you got the 15fps from... I would either shoot 50i or 60i and then filter the fields into frames in post, halving the speed of the action in the clip. However you will loose 1/2 vertical resolution. The HVX will allow for up to 60fps shooting with which you can achieve even slower slow-mo without any resolution loss.

As for viewing slow-mo in the viewfinder, I believe the HVX WILL be able to playback its varied framerate recordings at the appropriate speed, ie Slow-mo will look slow on camera playback.

To directly answer Shiloh Arts' question: the variable frame rates will provide PERFECT slow motion. Absolutely frame-accurate and perfect. No resolution loss, no off-speed hassles, just frame-accurate perfect film-style slow motion. Way, way, way better than you'd ever get in any NLE.

i have a question (that might not have an answer yet)... will the HVX be capable of the film equivalent of long exposures when undercranking? resulting in each frame being excessively blurred. i'm thinking of the way the speeder bike chases thru the forest in return of the jedi were filmed -- undercranked, long exposures, steadicam.

Yes, you can use long exposure times. In fact, you can do that with the DVX -- if you set it in 24p mode and set the shutter to 1/6, it will give you a frame-accurate simulation of 4P with a long shutter speed.

o sorry ...was thinking out loud. What I meant was the 15fps timeline in Avid. When I placed 24p footage into the timeline of the 15fps it looked pretty smooth. However, once I rendered it really looked horrible...seems as though I lost a lot of resolution because there were too many lines. If the HVX will do all this work in camera it will be much easiser because I don't have to really touch it in post.

Barry, thanks for that info....I think that's exactly what happened to me, I must have lost a lot of resolution and that's why the rendered footage looked terrible.

So, I took a look at the brochure, but I was wondering, where are the images of it coming from. I either missed it, cause I skimmed it and didn't read all of it; but are they HVX shots, or just varicam or DVX?

the brochure says that it will shoot in 1080i and 720p but then it says it will shoot progressive 24 and 30 in both...i'm a little confused at what -exactly that means...

also it doesn't say we can record direct to external firewire harddrive, does anyone know if this is possible and they just wanted us to get the idea of getting the 'p2 store' in our heads and budgets?

and has anyone heard more about the 16gig p2 card that i read about on the other thread?

gosh i am needy tonight...

They probably mention 1080i and 720p because they are the most common "standards". The other means that it can record other formats as well. So you could do 24p in 1080 instead of 60i in 1080. More options basically. I can imagine 1080/24p would be good for blowing up to 35 mm moviescreen.

It's marketing. The want to sell the P2 and consider it the primary choice. But other options are available. It's like Sony wants me to buy Sony-tapes to my Sony cam but my Fuji tapes work to... Except P2 is a different format but other P2 brands will probably turn up.

It means it does absolutely everything. You get 1080/24p, 1080/30p, and 1080/60i. Oh, and you get 720/24p and 720/30p and 720/60p too. Oh, and while they're at it, you get 480/24p and 480/30p and 480/60i, in three different flavors (DV, DVCPRO25, and DVCPRO50).

It means you get it all.

More specifically, it means that 1080/24p and 1080/30p get recorded within a 1080/60i signal, which is *exactly* how the DVX100 does it, and so does the XL2, and so does the SDX900, etc etc. It's a well-proven way to record 24p and 30p.

You will be able to record to an external hard disk recorder like a FireStore, yes. Not directly streaming to any old firewire drive; but then again, no camera can do that. But you will have firewire recorders to choose from; i.e., you're not locked in to P2 if you don't want to use P2.
and they just wanted us to get the idea of getting the 'p2 store' in our heads and budgets?
The P2 Store is not a firewire hard disk. It doesn't connect to the camera at all. I personally think the P2 Store is a dedicated news thing, I really don't expect too many DVXUser purchasers to be buying P2 Stores.

and has anyone heard more about the 16gig p2 card that i read about on the other thread?
Doesn't exist yet, but they expect that technology will progress at such a pace that they will be able to introduce a 16gb card at NAB in April 2006.

HVX CCD resolution?

HVX CCD resolution?

This new brochure conspicuously leaves out the specs on CCD resolution. Many have speculated about this. It seems possible that Panasonic may do something similar to Canon's approach to the XL2, 960x720, but wouldn't it be great if it were higher. Of course light sensitivity and noise become issues with such dense CCDs. I even read somewhere (maybe even here) that no lens exists that could provide adequate resolution for a 1920x1080 1/3" CCD. The question I have is, how do 7+ mega pixel still cams do it? Bigger sensor?

Great ass on that thing. Very clean. ;-)

I notice it says shipping November/December. They are certainly leaving themselves some wiggle room.

I'm expecting 1280 x 720 CCD's. But I'll take what they give me.

thanks for the answers guys, i figured that was the case but i was wondering if someone in the loop knew for sure, as i am the 'purchaser' for my company and another company. i want to not look like a schmo buy pushing a camera that doesn't have the feature's i say it does...

is there any actual full rez frame grabs, or even better - a clip available for use when i make my schpiel?

yay, i got to use the words schmo and schpiel, unfortunately there is no way to fit in the word schmelter or smegma...

For the type of filming I do, 60 fps would be awesome, but the price of these P2 cards is insane!

click the Supplies and accessories tab..

AJ-P2C004HG 4GB P2 High Performance Card $1,750.00 = OUCH!

You don't have to use P2 yet.

And prices always come down.

Only miniDV gets captured on the miniDV tape. If you shoot 720/60p, you can record that to the P2 card and then downconvert it onto the miniDV tape.

The camera looks incredible and just like everyone else, we are waiting to see what the footage looks like that is shot on the camera. Trying to be patient is the phrase of the day...
