Search as I might, I can't find an answer to this question: Did Panasonic, or anyone else, ever build an external XLR input for the GH3?

For that matter, for any DSLR type camera?

No, Panasonic has not, but there are third party devises that fill this void like JuicedLink, Beachtek, Tascam, etc.
The new Sony Alpha A7 series cameras as well as the DSC-RX10 (due to come out soon) do have an XLR add on devise as an accessory.
Canons C100 - 300 -500 have XlR inputs as well

JuicedLink makes them and they are very popular. I'm not sure if that is what your talking about.

Sony has a new shotgun and XLR thingy for the DSC-RX10 camera.
