GH4 Did a review of the GH4 and found it to be amazing but with a few major bugs...

Thought the readers of this subforum would be interested in this...

I write articles and do some reviews for fstoppers, so the full review is posted there:

In case you don't feel like reading the novel above, I'll give you the highlights below:

• 4k and 96fps in camera on this things are simply amazing for the price point.
• This system is VERY portable. Lightweight and small, awesome for outdoor productions.
• The stills I felt left something to be desired.
• The X Vario 12-35mm 2.8 is a great little lens and was my workhorse.
• Timelapses reveal color shifting. Hard to notice in single stills, but timelapse playback can get choppy because of this.
• My GH4 was very buggy in that it would freeze, not power on, display corrupt or missing memory card statuses, and it did this at every other shoot. Not acceptable.

I would sell my 60D kit for this in a heartbeat if the color shifting is fixed and the firmware gets an update (or whatever it takes to not freeze and be buggy).

I'm happy to answer questions or discuss the problems I had. Only had a (new) demo unit for about 3 weeks so it is no longer in my hands.

Nice. Came out after I had shot most of my footy. Glad to hear about it though!
You probably had beta firmware too. Was it a prerelease camera?

I'm not a pro stills guy but I like the pictures I'm getting with the GH4. However I also liked the GH3 a lot. Do you think as a stills camera it's not as good as the previous release and what is it about the stills you don't like?

I'm curious about the color shifting too...first time I've heard of it.
Looks like it's only if you try doing night-time long exposure shots? i.e., star trails?
Not sure if the ferris wheel segments in the above video had it or whether it was caused by the wheel's lights...

Actually I thought the timelapses from the GH4 are pretty amazing. The few I've seen in shot in autoexposure modes have no jitter!

This is one of those Internot problems. Someone isn't quite up to speed with things, but posts their failures with an air of authority. Suddenly people panic.

The Lumix 7-14 will make you giggle when you use it for stills. Great lens for outdoors.

Erik do you get much distortion on the 7-14? I've been thinking of going with a 11-16 with speed booster just so I can use it with other cameras. I currently have a canon version of the tokina but need to save up for the nikon version so I can use with a speed booster

Shot this with the GH3 and the 7-14. It was a time lapse. This is at 7mm. Yes it distorts but I love it! at 14mm it's much less. Such a fun lens.

Guys, perspective distortion will occur with any ultra-wide. It's just how it works.

I sold my Tokina 11-16 when I switched from Nikon to Panasonic. Admittedly this is before the Speed Boosters came out, but it's still a great lens, and it's small. Not being able to mount filters easily however, is a real pain.

That's probably version I. My version II has a filter thread, so it really plays well with speedbooster combo.
