Detail - not a noise question

Maybe a simple question...

Since sharpening can always be done in post why not always set detail (and perhaps vertical detail) at -7?

Agreed. I don't own the camera, but I have always found the panasonic line to look very nice with - 7 detail. Even on the DVX.

Dont agree. Sharpening in post can never bring in detail that does not exist. It aint "magic"

If you believe that it does.. why bother focussing anything?

I happen to agree with Shooter, and I think that -7 detail is too soft unless you have some really great glass in front of it. The settings in camera should be worked with but they should be looked at with a Waveform monitor, and not the built in on as you can see enough detail. As an example I did a -7 detail with a +7 coring and the picture was noisier than it was when I brought the coring down to 0. Coring is noise reduction aimed at detail. If there is no detail noise to work on, it works against the sharpness in the picture. For those of you who have recieved your Barry Green book, read up on page 73.

Best,

I can't imagine wanting to shoot anything with detail set higher than -7, which if I understand it, is off. Adding a dark edge to a subject looks terrible to me and screams, "video; I'm horrible, intrinsically evil, dirty commie rat video!"

Of course opinions vary; as I like to say, that's why they have more than one flavor in the ice cream store.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo
