Hey all I thought I would share a funny story.
So as a cinematographer I have done a lot of commercials, but I have never been asked to shoot anything as weird as what I shot today. An ad agency I shoot for a lot on various car commercials and sports/fashion commercials called me up to shoot a viral spot for a newer company called Liquipel, they spray your iphone, or android phone with a coating of these ion's that you cannot feel or detect and basically it water seals your phone and by look and touch you would never tell the difference. It is crazy technology.
Anyway so the goal of the production company was to be the first to shoot a full commercial on the iphone 5. So we got a bunch of iphone 5's with the liquipel seals on them. Then we took out our trusty RED red scarlet and some zeiss glass and shot a commercial of us using the phone's out in the water while we shot a commercial for Jet levi. Yes we did two commercials in one haha it got weird. If taking a bunch of iphone 5's into the ocean to shoot a high powered jet pack does not sound dangerous enough for the phone. I was also asked to rig 2 iphones onto the underside of the jetpack where the water comes out and get an angle looking down the jet stream as the girl flying it takes off. So the damage is basically 2 operators in the water with iphones, getting blasted with the jet stream, and 2 phones mounted onto the jetpack jet-stream. Then the Red shooting the madness from the beach.
I am proud to say the rigging on the jet pack held the phones in place, but unfortunately a bad landing caused them to go a little too deep in the water and neither of the phones rigged to the jetpack seem to turn on haha jury is still out on weather or not the footage is stored. The third iphone we killed was submerged in salt water for quite a while and we think that's what did it.
However I am proud that the other phones we brought out which were hit with jets and dropped in the water are all working wonderfully and we got some really awesome footage. We brough 8 phones out and I would say considering the beating we gave them only loosing 3 is an impressive feat haha. The red captured some hilarious moments and all and all it was a fun day and we got some crazy shots.
