Dell 2405,

Barry has said that it does an adequate job for the cash. You can check out his posts if you search for this monitor. This is what Im buying as it would double as a computer monitor. I think it's the best value for the price. I've done my searching as well.... and it seems a solid choice all the way around

I love my 2405's. I have yet to get my hands on my HVX, but I'm sure for all but the most critical work it will do fine. I've set a few pictures as the desktop that made the monitors seems as though I was looking out a window. i had to stare at them for a while. This is not real test of their reference ability, but these are amazing monitors.

I think it was Barry that said once I had unpackaged them (the monitors) that I wouldn't be able to get rid of them. He was so right.

Do you feel this is adaquate for a reference monitor for the hvx?

As long as you stick with 60 Hz it is a real bargain.
But all PAL-DVX users should keep in mind that the monitor cannot refresh at 50 Hz! That's why I had to sell it ...

What did you get to replace it? I am tempted by the Dell but need 50Hz!

I don´t now the problem with 2405 and PAL? I have use my 2405 in 4 month.

Why do you keep posting this stuff, Michael? It does refresh at 50Hz, I thought that photo in another thread was enough of a proof, but apparently you don't even care what any of us, who are actually using the monitor, say.
Go ahead and get it, mmm. Great display, real bargain for the money.

It says that at 1920x1200 it is 60Hz only...

How does it effect the picture? Is it that bad?

That's DVI. S-Video and Composite inputs both refresh at 50Hz. I don't have anything with Component out to test that, but I'm sure it works too.

That's what I tested:

(1) Sony FX1 (50 Hz PAL), Dell component video input, using the Dell as monitor:
Motion studdering when panning and zooming.

(2) Playback of HDV files (25p/50i), Dell DVI input (1920 x 1200):
The same artifacts.

(2) Playback of HDV files (25p/50i), Dell ANALOG input (1920 x 1200), forced to 50 Hz with software "power strip":
The same motion studdering!!! So obviously the Dell does NOT refresh at 50 Hz, even though the monitor information says so!

(3) Playback of sample HDV files (30p/60i) downloaded from the VASST webstite, Dell DVI input (1920 x 1200):
PERFECT, smooth pans and zooms. No motion studdering.

Can anyone confirm these test results?

Vic, have you really TESTED the 50 Hz capability of S-Video and Composite or do you just rely on what the monitor info says?
Darned, but S-Video and Composite are the two inputs I have NOT tested.

Michael

Just took this photo:

dell2405comp.jpg

DVX connected to Dell 2405 via Composite input with DVI in PIP mode.

And this one I posted earlier:

dell2405.jpg

My JVC deck connected to the monitor via S-Video, also with DVI in PIP mode

Both were 25p and both worked perfectly, save for pixelization due to scaling the picture up 4 times to fit the screen. That's actually the only downside of this display - it does pretty lousy job of scaling non-HD signals.

Lucky you!
All my HDV 25p and 50i/p files studdered just awful on the Dell.
Playing the same files back on a Eizo 19" 1280x1024 (set to excactly 50 Hz!) they look just PERFECT. (I am definitely not imagining things!)

Is there any more technically skilled member than me that has an explanation?

Already searched that thread for "50 Hz" but didn't find a match.

Anyway, my post wasn't aimed at you... the first post in this thread was

and this has been discussed at length in the other topic. At least they put it in the hardware forum...

The viewsonic looks nice, but it's also 1300 and only has DVI input. I think this Dell is a great value and Barry said it's not too heavy to lug around. Maybe not ideal, but cetainly a good value.
