Delivery...

I for one would prefer to see at least a couple months between the time the first cameras are assembled and when production models ship, so that lots and lots of actual shooting can be done in the field by experienced shooters and the camera can be fully tweaked and refined. I don't intend to be upgrading to a RED ONE-a in a year or two, so I'd rather sacrifice a few months up-front to get a unit that's really dialed in.

Guys -

Take time necessary to max the camera and accessories. How many years we would have to wait for something like RED if you had not start this project?... Just keep in touch. We really appreciate the fact that you communicate with us, unlike many Big Guys of the industry. We believe it's worth the wait.

Best,
Bogdan

Jim:

After 26 years in this business, I've learned the art of patience. Your camera will be ready when you deem it so, and not a moment before. Thank you for your efforts on our collective behalf and for giving all of us a glimpse into your remarkable world. I look forward to the release as much as anyone but realize the enormity of your chosen task. Good luck. As they say, "Good things come to those who wait..."

I too, would rather wait a month or two - to see either the prototypes or the first 100 units shipped to be put through the paces by the pros. I'd like to see the software, hardware, and manufacturing modified and dialed in before 'mass production' takes place.

I'd even like to see batches made and modified. Batch 1. RED #1-50 - version 1.0 in January, Batch 2. RED #50-100 - version 1.2 in February, Batch 3, RED # 100-150 - version 2.0 in March... etc... Just a suggestion. :-)

Depending on the auto-maker many of us, tend to wait a year or two for the manufacturer to find and get the bugs out. However, there are some companies like RED that can get it right the first time and many of us will happily take the chance and buy a new cutting edge sports car, computer, or RED camera!

Any details? How many months and units do you plan to test? 5 cameras over 2 months or 100 cameras over 3 months, etc... would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully we can all read the feedback posted here and enjoy the red-volution taking place.

I hope to have Red 1.2 and software upgrade 2.0 by the time my #217 is shipped before April. Good luck and Take your time.

thanks for the update jim. i for one am entertained enough by the little previews that waiting for the main feature isnt an issue. i think anyone putting pressure on you ought to recieve a small solar calculator with "red" written on it in a premature shipment.

I think it's far too early to even ask about production volumn and unfair to the development team. Red is putting enough pressure on itself. Please don't rush it. If it's delivered later than expected but it's done right, that's what's important.

Lot's of naysayers out there are salivating over the chance to justify their
skepticism with a Red product full of unresolved problems.

Plus there is so much work to be done with recording devices, codecs, camera features besides a working sensor, etc.

In this business companies delay product releases/updates for months and months. I don't think Red delays will run long enough to be ojectionable
given the consequences of releasing a poor product and all the people just waiting to say "I told you so".

The main reason we are taking reservations is so that we can gauge our production. If we had no done this, trust me, we would NOT have been prepared for what is happening and people would have been waiting forever. We are getting a pretty good sense that we have a tiger by the balls and will know a lot more after IBC when the 4k footage is shown. The workflow will be addressed and should make many people happy.

ok now in the name of the patience itself, it's enough.. jim jannard knows he has the support of all of us.. including those without your patience or gear.. so, please, he doesn't need his ass so kissed as before..

i and my partners, we are leaving other options away to go to the red partnership:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=60696

as you see, three months ago i predicted based on mike curtis viewpoint.. then, jim was fair.. now, the same route as usual though he has came to the same conclusion.

me really likes this red madman, if not i will not be here.. but this "politically correct" is what it is.

my real name cannot be jim murdoch www.cinematography.com (forum) but isn't it possible a fair balance between the two sides?

our jim needs it.. we, as his future buyers, also.

The point is: Specs can change at any time and delivery date is NOT locked down. I just want to make this point clear (again). We would rather maintain our elbow room for now.
Jim

The specs are sensational right now and with all the added hints ("Magic Focus" or how is it called?) I guess nobody will be dissapointed by the them.

So, the worst case scenario would be a great but unreliable camera, because maybe some chip acts up in low temperatures.

Its not like the camera would crash into the ground like the Mars Probe because somebody forgot to convert gallons to volt, but that would kill The Revolution pretty quickly.

So, take your time. Better to lugg around some rented Vipers until late spring instead of learning new international curses from this forum.

Jochen

PS: Ok, can I at least get a model at ibc?
One I can point at something and make camera noises? :-))

Avatar? That´s me (discovering what that little black spot on the top of my MacBookPro display is for).

I used to be a musician (anybody know "Passport"?). Played in the studios - on lots of filmscores - got to write some of my own - that became a fulltime profession (check out my site).
Wrote some scores for a friendly producer - told him about a passed away colleague - 2 days later he offers me a chance to direct a documentary. Since then I´m teaching myself the optical side of what I did for a long time.
In order to talk to a DoP I figured I should do some small projects on my own - making my own mistakes. That went well - seems I´ve spent enough time on sets and in editing suites to pick up something.
Big fun. Starting my first fiction project. Between writing, playing and conducting now I´ve discovered Shake - think I´m having too much fun. I have to clone myself.

Thank god the Red´s not ready yet.

It's alright. There are so distinctive users here:

- There is who needs for yesterday like ourselves.

- And there is who can wait why is shooting already from 1080 or 720.

- Or even who needs some time first, saving for the $17,500, plus what will be necessary to put the camera working.

Conclusion: There are different people over here.
