Delivery...

Jannard

Red Leader
We said at NAB that our target was to show 4k footage in the fall. If everything goes as planned, we will show 4k footage at IBC, two weeks before fall. We have also said that our TARGET is to assemble the 1st camera (non-production) in Dec. and our TARGET is to ship early 2007. Early can be as late as April in our minds. We hope to continue our good fortune and stay ahead of schedule BUT we have many hard problems to solve and a lot of work to do ahead of us. Mike Curtis stated that he felt that it might be as late as June before we were done. I hope to prove his words too conservative. The point is: Specs can change at any time and delivery date is NOT locked down. I just want to make this point clear (again). We would rather maintain our elbow room for now.

I am sure that once we show footage, the wait will be worth it, no matter how long it is. I'm not disguising bad news here, just being realistic and warding off undo enthusiasm and potential disappointment. Remember, we started this whole project 8 months ago with no adult supervision... well, maybe except for Stuart and Graeme.

Jim

I have no problem waiting for something this good. If I wait a little longer for you to make sure you have it right, I can live with that.

Best of luck at IBC :)

Hey jim sounds good. if you guys can get a whole Camera, Lense's, Work flow, Storgae, And everything else that will be amazing. If it isn't done till DEC 2007 in time for Christmas but you deliver on everything and it is the top of the game i don't think anyone will judge you for it. Good luck And I think you guys will make April in time for NAB shipments.

Unlike the industry standard, we have been an open book from the beginning. That works to everyone's advantage because we have received valuable feedback. But it also puts us under the gun. As long as everyone listens to the "specs can change" and "target" parts, we are all going to be happy.

Jim

I think they will. And we do apperciate being part of the process, It makes for better relations with a company, and ultimently a better line of products. I can see that you are under the gun. And anyway its not like your asking us to poney the whole price of the camera up. Just a small sum. So there are always going to be nay sayers but you know what they can jump off a cliff.

We appreciate the updates, and I hope people can keep realistic expectations on the delivery date. Let's not forget that the HVX, which was promised for 4Q 2006, had its initial shipment on December 29th. And the CinePorter, which many HVX users are anxiously awaiting, has had its release date delayed a few months. These things happen when developing a brand new product, and we as the buyers are going to have to be patient.

When I was in the videogame industry I heard a phrase that has stuck with me ever since. "A late game is only late until it ships; a bad game is bad forever." So take the time you need, and don't ship it until it's ready (ship no wine before its time!) but -- with that said -- hurry up!

Barry... thanks for the support. We really appreciate it. I've always liked you. The bad news for us is that Panasonic has been in the camera business for a zillion years and we started ours 8 months ago. Or is that the good news?

Jim

I am really excited to show our homespun footage (very short) at IBC. The problem is that if everyone responds like those that have seen it so far, there will be an automatic demand that we finish the project NOW.

Jim

I also have zero problem with shipping the camera "when it's done", as id software love to say.

I LOVE that you are so open about the development process - it is such a refreshing change in a world that seems to operate on quarterly results driven mantras cloaked in secrecy and elitism.

As you correctly say, the feedback process, while it can be time consuming to read all the time, is one of the strengths of Red as it can only lead to the best camera on the market, PERIOD!! I mean, your core crew is small which means that ordinarily they would not be able to think of every aspect of the camera to maximise its potential. But by opening it up to discussion along the way, you instantly have thousands of professionals who see a thousand different solutions to your problems, which you can then cull to the best ones to incorporate into the final design. It's the best possible marriage between good open source design principles and a guiding team that has the overall say, to keep things coherent and focused so as not to lose sight of the final objective.

Jim, I also sense a bit of nerves right now - it's pretty evident in your recent posts I think. You are nervous because IBC is where the rubber meets the road, so to speak, and it's perfectly natural with all that could go wrong at the last minute display wise. But don't worry - if the footage is half as good as those who have seen it make out, you have NOTHING to worry about and will be VERY popular after the 8th :)

Keep up the good work Red Team!!!

I think having a sensor which is performing better than promised and having footage four months after NAB is a pair of unbelievable achievements.

I'd rather wait until you are completely satisfied Red One works flawlessly than have it rushed out too soon! I'm quite happy to wait until its right.

It would be great if the Red Team could pick a frame which represents the dynamic range of the uncharacterized sensor and put it online next friday night so us working stiffs that can't be at IBC can have a taste!

:dankk2: for the update. Honest and very useful indeed.

Cheers and good luck!

Hey Jim, Rome wasn't built in a day.

A revolution isn't spontaneously conceived.

Like I've said all along, heck even with the release of the HVX......I'm willing to wait as long as it takes until you folks have gotten it right.

Please don't let all the demand that you'll receive cause you to rush building this beauty, afterall, perfection takes time.

Jim, you are a class act. We all appreciate sincerely your honesty and high level of open communication with your customers. I really wish I could fly to Amsterdam to celebrate with you guys. The footage is going to blow away the entire industry!

Get it perfect, then ship it. We will wait.

But I think you already know that :)

Come to think of it they might give you a hard time on cinematography.com if there is a delay or change, but, well, the less attention paid to some of those chaps the better.

Jim,

I think the real statement made by so many here is the fact that, as a group, they have invested over $300,000.00 in your dream. Up to this point the only physcial evidence of this has been models, online pictures, and a few people telling us what they have seen.

Don't for a second think this is why we jumped on board. To us, YOU are Red. You and your team. We have all made the decision to trust you and your vision, and to follow it regardless of where it may lead.

In my life I have never known something like this to happen in quite this way. It's a statement of trust and respect that I doubt you will get anywhere else for any other reason. A statement born not of words, but of actions and hard earned cash.

I for one, am proud to be a part of the team.

That's GOOD NEWS - VERY GOOD NEWS, Jim. At least in the way I see things.

Additionally, I'm in the camp of waiting and supporting an effort that as I see it - is needed in this market arena and numerous others. That effort would be classified as innovative/ground breaking - unfortunatly this is not seen as often as it should be. So I applaud you and your teams effort in setting and defining a new benchmark. The mfg/ship date will be what it will be.

I would bet the majority of us will wait patiently for the product and the one's that don't well...it's not something I would put much concerns too. You've been very clear and honest with us - which is a trait that is not seen as often as it should be and is one that we all should embrace with open arms.
