GH4 Delaying shoot for GH5?

joe12south,

one snag could be noise when using AF. I've got the 1DXmkII and 70D and the NON STM lenses can get pretty noisy when using AF tracking which in a shooting setup like your talking about wouldn't work very well.

not sure how the GH5 responds to certain lenses though.

The newly introduced Dual IS 2 lenses are advertised as being silent focusing for video use. YMMV

Do they still make those fish eye or wide angle adaptors? I know it's not ideal, but maybe you could use the Lumix 12-35 with the extra glass wide angle adaptor on the end?

Or anamorphic

Or getting crazy, two cameras mounted side by side and stitched in post? Bonus of no lens distortion.

I would delay if you can...I think the big advantages are of course higher ISO performance without noise (never get all the DR discussions, but you're lighting so really irrelevant)...also internal recording and of course no crop in shooting in 4K which for me would be the most relevant!...As for the actors...the only actors I've worked with that work fast are soap opera actors...everybody else...well it's hard...I agree with your idea of rolling on both at the same time, as you never know what shot you will get/miss...but, being narrative, you have the advantage of multiple takes...lastly, a consideration regarding the GH5 would be the media you record to...this is where I really love external recorders to SSD and a RAID on set for backing all your footage....anyway...you obviously have it all planned out already...just my view of the considerations if I was faced with your choices...

Recent video shot during demo at Sammy's in LA confirms how the programmable focus points work. Really nice moves, and the operator can trigger focus to 3 different points on command by tapping the screen (some earlier videos made is seem like it could only be triggered by timer, or by hitting record.) If I can confirm that I can do it from the mobile app, I might be able to eliminate the need for a 2nd operator to pull focus.

Can't you do focus pulls from the remote on one of the newer G series cameras? I seem to recall it being mentioned in a thread several months ago.

You can tap to focus, but that causes the camera to hunt. The GH5 is the first camera to allow you to pre-set 3 focus points, and then move to them at one of 5 different speeds on command. Since the camera already knows where it is going, there isn't the ugly pulsing as it tries to find focus. Instead, Panny has programmed the focus movement with an easing curve over the duration of the "pull" to simulate a human riding a good manual lens.

The GH5 is going to be such a game changer: in body stabilization, 10bit 4:2:2 V-LogL, focus control, 180fps slow motion, , high def anamorphic, and all still in a modestly sized body!
