Dear Mr. Sony

Dear Mr. Sony
I purchased 2 LA-EA2 adapters and 2 (fairly) fast Sony Alpha zoom lens'.
They have been sitting in my drawer, wrapped up, waiting for your software update.
Of coarse they are currently little more than paper weights until such time as your software guys release the (Much) awaited firmware upgrade.
If you could possibly expedite the release, I will gladly send you some of my wifes home made chocolate chip cookies. (they're friggin awesome)
The Nikons and even the kit lens are working fine, but I really want to try out the Alpha glass on my cameras.

Thanks, and I await your responce.
Chris

Hail, hail! I just got my Minolta 80-200mm APO G f2.8 Lens. The LA- EA2 is just a dumb adaptor without the update. I tested it on a NEX 5N, it was awesome. Focusing was fast with so many focus options, aperture was accurate, the zoom is parfocal, the image quality is beatiful. Mr Sony please release the firmware already.

+1

Out of curiosity (and not having really looked) is it possible for the LA-E2 to act as a real dumb adapter with locking the mirror up?

My current plan is to use the LA-E2 with it's tripod adapter to mount it securely on rails so it protects the amount a bit from the lens weight. Of course that would work with manual lenses better if the mirror could be taken out of the path so we don't see a light reduction?

cheers
Paul

I broke down last week and bought an LA-EA1 for $95.00 used from B&H it arrives tomorrow. I want to use my camera and will just eat the $95 as part of my "training costs". I almost bought a Zeiss 16-35 this weekend but I held off until I can at least try the 24-70. I was hoping and asked in another thread if someone here who claims to be talking to Sony why they didn't at least put out a firmware that would allow minimum functions but got no reply or interest from anyone.

I came so close to getting a 24-70 yesterday, i'd be very interested to hear what you think about it with manual focusing and general usage. Of course sounds like you can't actually do anything with it just yet? If only it didn't extend it would be near perfect. Oh and have IS...

Then it will be the 16-35 and then the 70-200...

cheers

You are correct, I won't have a chance to use the 24-70 until later this week, booked on Mon,Tues,Wed. But my friend Bill who is on this group from time to time has used his 24-70 extensively and is more than happy with it, and we both agree with you on the extending. I am probably just going to go with a Chroziel clip on when I need my grads etc and spring for a Heliopan or two. It will feel odd working without a matte box. The Tokina 11-16 I bought could turn out to be pretty sweet though and no extension, I figured if Duclos are using it as a base for their 11-16 mod then the optics must be good.

Does the LA-E2 not work as a dumb adapter too? I though i'd at least be able to mount the lens, manual focus and perhaps change aperture.

Lee filters do a nice bellows style clip on which uses their filter ranges. It's pretty light and works fairly well. Of course you're into their filter ranges but they are also very good generally. D matte has a clip on too that could be worth looking at.

The 11-16 has good feedback too

cheers

LA-EA2 is only a dumb adapter currently. you can mount the glass and manual focus. no iris , no af, no is.

EDIT, I don't own a sony dslr so I don't know if you can do the canon trick with the iris. I pop off my sony glass and it looks like the apeture is about f22 or so.

videohog, that's interesting, i'd read earlier (found an older thread here) that said the LA-E2 would operate in the same way as the E1 and allow for iris adjustments only. The firmware is really needed for any kind of auto focus.

So you have an LA-E2 with FS100 and alpha lenses and it's purely super dumb at this stage?

And defaults to iris closed down (canons default to wide open)

cheers
Paul

With the fs100 and the LA-ea2 and sony alpha glass, Any attempt to adjust iris or af , will pop up a box that says "incompatable lens installed" (or something similar)

with the canon trick, I meant to pop the canon lens on a canon dslr and adjust the apeture to say...5.6. then when you pop it on the fs100 the apeture stays at 5.6.
(I don't have a sony dslr to see if the sony alpha glass apeture stays the same after you take the glass off.)

EDIT yes , I have 2 fs100s, 2 la-ea2s, and a sony 16-50 2.8 and a sony 25-78 2.8. (and yes, they are currently just about paper weights only at this stage)

I attached it to a Nex 5n then back, it defaults to it's widest opening. In the case of my 80-200, F2.8. It's flawless in the Nex 5n. Fast and accurate 15 phase focusing with 3-4 modes, and full auto or manual aperture control. This is what we should expect when the firmware's released.

I think march is the release date on the firmware right? We also could have pushed them out a bit with all the firmware wish lists items I gave them as they were seriously considering the input from the wish list thread.

Got the LA-EA1 and will now begin to work with my new lenses. Noisy when changing FStop is my first observation guess that is not an issue for stills shooters.

What I'm curious about is (when the firmware comes out) the apeture being stuck at 3.5 when the AF is on. I guess that's the only apeture they could come up with and still have the af work reliably?

I guess my biggest question is whether i can one touch AF, then go manual, all at f2.8. I'm not looking for continuous AF. I find the one touch AF on the EX1 useful in the same way.

I'll be very disappointed if i'm limited to f3.5 and to be honest i really don't understand technically why...

cheers
