C100: Dead/Stuck Pixels?

I'm about to return my second C100 in seven days due to the same problem: dead/stuck pixels.

The first unit arrived on Monday. In testing, I filmed dark areas as well as just black - without a lens with the body cap on - and discovered two separate pixels in the upper half of the frame (not near each other) seemingly stuck on green, getting brighter as I increased ISO all the way up to max. I sent it back, the engineers who looked at it saw the issue straight away and sent me a new replacement which I received today.

Much to my dismay, doing the same tests on the new unit revealed the same issue - two separate pixels stuck on green, this time in the lower half of the frame, although one of them only shows up after about ISO 800. Both get brighter as i increase the ISO, though interestingly one of them disappears between ISO 2500 and 5000, showing clearly at all other ISOs including the lowest.

The brightest of these stuck pixels on both units were just about clear enough to be visible on the LCD of the C100 itself when filming something dark.

Obviously any new camera may potentially have a couple of these, but on two units consecutively? Has anyone experienced anything like this or am I just incredibly unlucky? Finally, does anyone have any advice on how I should proceed?

Been there, done that!

Have you done an Automatic Black Balance on the cam. See in the instruction manual. Its a simple menu option - ABB. Just put the cap on before you start ;-)

Takes just a few seconds to do and should (hopefully) solve this for you.

By the way, I learnt this the hard way with my C100 last November...Good luck and let us know how it works out .

This is not an uncommon issue and as Andy states, you can usually fix the problem by doing a black balance. Sometimes it takes several black balances to remove or mask the offending pixels. Try this before you send the camera back.

Thank you both for the black balancing suggestion: The retailer suggested the same on the second occasion, but strangely not on the first.

Anyway, the bottom line is: It worked!

just noticed a white pixel on my c100, what does a ABB actually do? im going to run thru it a few times and hope it works. I thought it was dust on the sensor thing the glass bit in front of it and cleaned it but the issue persisted.

I'm amazed how little people actually know about ABB (automatic black balance), Canon should point it out more. I run ABB at least once before every shoot even multiple times during a shoot if I have the time.

I used to use it all the time when using school cameras back in my the ol days of the DVX100A/B but having used DSLR's for almost 3 years made me forget about that feature. I knew the feature was there but honestly just forgot about it and its abilities. Now Ill use it after every shoot and each rental.

I black balance before every shoot day or after a big change in lighting conditions. It doesn't take the long if you program it to a shortcut.

Sorry, I know this has been asked a thousand times, but I continue to be curious.

Do you pull the lens every time and put on the body cap (as Canon recommends) or do you point into a dark area, stop down and just use the lens cap - which is what I've been doing, seemingly without problems , but always wonder if I'm missing something.

I started off with the body cap but have lately been doing the lens cap thing. I haven't noticed any problems.

Lens cap and a hand or black cloth on top of lens cap for me. Works fine.
I'll do the body cap only if I've got a ton of time before shooting.
