Day For Night Test

I'm looking at doing some day for night stuff for a short soon and figured I should probably test it out beforehand. I don't really know what to say about these grabs. I looked online and heard that you were supposed to underexpose by a few stops and add a slight blue tint to your footage along with shooting in overcast weather. It's not overcast now, but it will be when I do the shoot so hopefully that'll make it look somewhat better.

Too much blue? I don't really know, some help is always nice!

I just used after effects and magic bullet. With MB I applied the basic look, from there I think I may have messed with the gamma or contrast a little bit and added the blue tint.

honestly, that looks really good. It might still be a teeny bit too lit for night (unless there are lights around) but you've got great color and shadows for moon luminance. Keep tinkering with it, and really look at and study nighttime shots in films, and just go outside and notice how each color and shape looks at night. It will help you keep the vision fresh in your head of what you want the final product to look like.

looks good. Tinker away. If the shadows from the trees weren't so harsh, it'd definately be more convincing. Little darker overall also would help.

Sure, B-Man...you're just saying that because you are afraid if you disagree with J.H. he'll ban you. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

J/K . . . serious, guy...it looks pretty good. It looks like a typical movie "night scene" to me.

Peace,
Larry

haha, looks just like your sig, PaPa. Yours and Ryan's versions of the shot look good. I think either one passes for a night shot really well.

shooting during the "magic hour" helps although that period of time is quite fleeting so you really have to plan your shot. other than it looks good. big sell would be to add a light like a porchlight or something...maybe light the window. however at night seeing into the window would be bright and clear. that might be hard to pull off in the daytime.

Looks good. Did you try the Day for Night MB pre-set also?

I don't have a problem with it, but I know some DP's who think "blue midnight" is cheesy. Instead of a blue color correct, you could try a more "flat grey." Or just de-saturate the blues a little bit.

2 cents.

:kali: :crybaby: NEW EMOTICONS!

Possibly a little less blue, just try it out and see how it looks. Even if you leave it as is, it has a definite night feel. Good work.

I like it. The general audience will accept the bluish look, because reguardless of how accurate it is, it's standard in most films.
