DaVinci Resolve

Dear friends - and moderators: would it be possible and/or advisable to start a subforum for DaVinci Resolve? I note that there is a Edius subforum, where the last thread was started more than a year ago... not very active. Meanwhile, I suspect that more and more folks will gravitate to DaVinci Resolve, and I expect that it will be a subforum that's more active than several subforums already established (Edius, Vegas etc.).

I came here to ask folks about their impression of Resolve 16, and I didn't see a subforum, hence my inquiry re: subforum. But be that as it may, moving on to the matter at hand:

My experience is the FCP series, and I never made the transition to X. But now I'm slowly gathering resources for a project I want to shoot, and of course post is part of that, and the key question of the NLE choice. I figure it's time to move off of the legacy FCP, and I've narrowed it down to either FCPX or DV Resolve. Given the prices, there isn't much difference (about $150 difference) between them. But that's not the key. Basically I'm interested in your experience. There are definitely things I like about Resolve - it's crossplatform (so I'm not stuck exclusively with Apple hardware), and BM seems really aggressive about evolving and updating Resolve. Apple seems to rest a bit on their laurels. Also, it goes without saying that CC is going to be a strong point for Resolve, but much more important to me is sound - and it seems (am I wrong?!) that FCP is really subpar here, and I don't feel like investing time/effort into Logic; whereas Resolve seems aggressive in the sound department too, so if they're not a whole lot better in sound at the moment, they'll soon be, while I don't have much confidence Apple is moving with any speed there.

In any case, for a small indy feature, what do you see as far as FCPX vs DV Resolve 16? I guess I could buy both and try them out, but my thinking is that I'm time-limited, so I'd rather invest my time/energy in one NLE rather than do a half-a$$ed job with two, which won't give me a good comp unless I master both which I don't have the time for. Learn one, but learn it well.

What's your take? TIA!

Conforming from an NLE so you can do the color grading in Resolve is a clunky process from Premiere Pro. I wonder if it's much easier from FCPX, but I doubt it's easy or straightforward.

Yup. We need a Resolve subforum just like for the other NLEs.

First, if the somewhat restricted free version has what you want, DV is free. If you need the collaboration features, or the higher resolution editing, etc. then it's a whopping $299 which is considerably less than Adobe's yearly rental cost IIRC.

Second, given a choice between FCPX and DV-16 I would go with DV-16 for everything. Editing, sound, effects, coloring, all of it. And for just the reasons you stated -- BMD seems committed to growing Resolve, where as Apple seems sort of undecided. Still.

Yes for the Resolve sub-forum. Resolve is what I’m working with. I think a Resolve forum will be very active. Good call

New feature is that the Resolve dongle/activation will work to make the full Fusion software work. Same goes for the other way around.

.... I came here to ask folks about their impression of Resolve 16, .... !

Resolve 16 isn't ready. It is in beta and full of bugs. Many people are having trouble getting it to run, getting it to behave with their graphics card (me included), getting the proper driver from Nvidia (me included). It will be a while before it is ready. Some have been able to sort it out and Resolve 16 is running ok for them, but it is not ready for prime time.

I do recommend Resolve 15. I look forward to Resolve 16. It took me a bit to get to know nodes, but the color, edit, Fairlight, Fusion are so well integrated and so well done, I am getting more and more sold on it. The only bugger I have with it is the usual sort of thing where something doesn't work and you have a bit of a struggle going through Youtube videos to find the answer. I think that is typical of these very complex software packages.

Resolve 16 also does not work on Sierra. I'm stuck on Sierra for now as I need constant access to FCP7.

I agree, there should definitely be a Resolve forum. Resolve 16 looks to be pretty killer and the new Cut Page that's reminiscent of FCPX but with lots of improvements has me pretty excited.

That's what I thought, but I checked the Resolve 16 page last night and it now has the released version of Resolve 16 Studio available for $299. Given all the bugs being posted on BlackMagic's Resolve forum, I am really surprised to see it for sale so soon.

Forums are really easy to set up. Adding forums or subforums takes less than 10 minutes even if you are doing it for the first time. It costs practically nothing to setup and run. I setup a forum in about 45 minutes. Piece of cake.

Understood. It just occurred to me that if it did go down, it would be simple for someone to reproduce it. Of course, everyone would have to re-register and all the old threads would be lost, but if there was a desire to keep it going, perhaps under another name, it would be easy to do.
