I've been taking a look at DaVinci Resolve 14 as a change from FCPX and it's looking pretty good. Beta 6 is getting really polished.
So for those who use it with Canon cameras I have a few questions. Probably better on a DaVinci forum but there will be less Cx00 users there.
- There doesn't seem to be any benefit to transcoding footage (to ProRes). I know ProRes is more optimised on a Mac but playback of 4K XF-AVC is already perfectly fluid (2017 5K iMac). Also transcoding appears to lose some metadata so I'm just running with the native XF-AVC files.
- Is there any benefit in using the Canon XF-AVC utility to import the files from the camera? FCPX has an easy to use importer that wraps the files into .mov files and copies them to the library, whereas DaVinci Resolve just reads them from any folder. So I'm assuming the utility is no better than just copying the entire contents of the card using the OS. I always use a fresh card per shoot and organise files into folders based on the shoot day, and don't want to apply any LUTs etc during import. I always shoot dual cards for backup so it would be extremely rare I would have footage spanning cards.
- Does anyone use the ACES workflow? I applied the Canon Log 2 Cinema IDTs and it all looks great as is, just tweaking and adjusting exposure. Is it really that simple? The IDTs in Resolve are v1.0 not the latest v1.1 tho. Also they are designed for Neutral Matrix. I almost always shoot with this setting (Canon Log 2, Cinema Gamut, Neutral Matrix) mostly due to laziness - would there be much issue with using the IDTs say on footage shot with the Production Matrix instead? I'll be experimenting with it this week.
- Archiving of projects appears pretty simple with Resolve able to archive everything together including media. I'd then copy this archive to a backup RAID NAS and then after a while when I don't care about it I'll copy that off to a HDD. I'm assuming it's that simple, just Archive, copy the whole thing and if I need to work on it again copy it back to my working drive and Restore the archive?
Thanks in advance, from a Resolve newbie!
