Thanks Spatacus. There is a foreign film video store right next to my house so I will look into what the French have been up to, as well as basically having a good look at camera work in non fiction and fiction films. It will probably take me a while to figure out what non voyeur camera work is, especially when I shoot events, where i basically feel like i am a voyeur.

Interesting characters - Start making a story around one of the less drugged out people and have the other stuff as a backdrop - the square, condo conversion question, Quebecs homeless policy, the nations homeless policy, etc. Follow your subject around for a while. Your subject has to be sympatectic, not pathetic. Shoot to make a 'short' film and see where it leads you. . ..

Worry less about the technical aspect of it. You can start with a set of headphones and your camera. Find a subject or subjects who can communicate well and try to get 'under the surface' of whats going on. Thats what the viewer wants to see, and answer the questions we all have - Why are these people here? How are they different from you and me? Are they happy? Do they have dreams? How did they get to be the way they are ? etc...

Thanks Dusterdoo. Your ' advice along with the pm has made me want to go out and shoot that short. I was a bit confused as to how to tackle it, but the questions you posed are a great starting point.

dogcat.. that's great. Also don't get too caught up in what's Voyeuristic and what's not... and what is a REAL doc and what is manipulated propeganda, etc. Most docs are from one perspective or another.. and then you shape the subject to tell a story. Everything has a point... even its its a two sided one. There has to be some artifice and some editing and juxtaposition. It should be entertaining... educational and show a view of the world that's unique. As they say all the stories has been told, but it's your unique vision that is the only difference.

Now I say most because there are a few docs that are simply interviews, cuts on black, and photos. Hitler's Secretary, which was later made into that film... forgot the title... but I'll remember it later. This is pure and unedited... AND TOTALLY BORING.. BORING BORING. Couldn't stand it.... but it shows the one extreme.

Then I think you get the new wave of entertainment and fun docs. Erroll Morris is the MAN who started it all off. Check out Thin Blue Line or anything else he's done. I also love the guy who did Curt and Courtney and that doc about the Female serial killer...

The new wave of docs is to entertain and enlighten. Look at the success of Penguins, Supersize me, and Michael Moore. Who wants to appeal to elitistis and have blank black shots and boring interviews?
