can't speak on the d90, but video recording on the 5dm2 can apparently be triggered on/off with either the canon rc1 or rc5 wireless remotes.

theres no way to do some sort of trick like reassign OK button to regular shutter button and then use that or wired/wireless remote? I know, the OK button is really bad, half the time i cant even shut off shooting first time i press it when holding cam in hands

was looking into the same thing, here is what i found.
not sure if or how it works but there is a free download before you buy.
if there is no lag, then it might be possible to use a laptop instead of a monitor as well.

wow this is actually pretty cool.
perhaps a small laptop can be used as a field monitor now? (i havent used this so just guessing)

hopefully these guys can hack the firmware one day (or at least unofficially) seems they seem to be able to control many things with this camera...
