Hey,

Im really considered selling my D90 to upgrade to the 7D by the end of this month.

I really luv that the 7D can record great audio along with a beautiful picture.

but i'll be mad if Nikon decides to just drop a NEW nikon that blows the 7D away this spring. have you heard of any new Nikon?

also, How can i use my Nikon Lenses with the 7D?

Can I use my Glidecam 4000 with the DSLR?

What would you do?

Im in the same boat, i want a 7D sooooo badly.

Glidecam should work fine, i have the 1000 pro, and works just fine for D90, and 7D isnt much heavier.

If i had the money, i would have a 7D today. I hate that it uses flash cards though, and they are like 3-4 times more than SD cards which i have 40GB worth of, lol.

As for using nikon lenses, just need a lens adapter, check ebay.

I had a D90 and went to my current camera, a 5dmk2. For me the difference is night and day, the D90 doesn't come close. I don't know about the future, but on a case by case basis I'd say the 7D is also massive better than the D90 when it comes to filmmaking.

I'm a little bit confused about this statement, as the 7D has an AGC which makes its onboard audio essentially useless for any situation in which "great" audio is required - except as a reference to sync external sound with.

I haven't heard of anything, but I feel that Nikon would be a foolish company not to offer something that tries to be better than the 7D...or the 5D...or the 1D. They are letting Canon have all the fun. Of course, Nikon may simply be holding out as a photographic company that just makes photographic cameras.

also, How can i use my Nikon Lenses with the 7D?

Older Nikon lenses (essentially, those with a manual focus and aperture) can be used with the 7D via an adapter. How much you want to pay for that adapter is up to you - from $15 to $300.

Newer Nikon lenses - those without an aperture ring - will not communicate with the 7D. In most cases, this causes the lens to constantly work stopped down to the smallest aperture. In some lenses, one can manually rig the aperture lever to widen the aperture, but that's a bit too chancy for me.

The 7D works well on the 4000. I'm ordering one myself next week.

What would you do?
If the Nikon prevents you from working, switch. If its working for you, keep it.

everything sounds good. yes I was referring to adding an external mic such as a Rode. lets just say the Mic is better than the D90.

I think im trade up for the 7D. i seen to many good videos, short films with it.

thx for your input

The recording quality is better in the 7D since it's 48/16 and useful in many situations, except maybe straight interviews where an AGC will ruin it.

I went from D90 to 7D and don't regret it.

Me third. I got a Nikon to EOS adapter on Ebay for $15 and it works great, the most ridiculous thing is I have an old manual Nikon lens that wouldn't meter on the D90 but does on the 7D.

Also I wouldn't expect Nikon to come out with a 7D buster anytime soon. They had a chance to upgrade their video with the d300s and didn't, they really seem to underestimate what the customer wants and seem to think intense ad campaigns with celebrities will compensate that. If by chance they make a 7D buster, Canon will have come out with something better and/or cheaper/easier, they're just more in tune with videographers and respond to customers suggestions. Of course I would love to eat my words here, I was totally for Nikon until I used the 7D, and hurts me a little to see Canon be just so much more awesome, as silly as it is.

the future doesnt matter. sell ur 7d if u see sumthing better in ur opinion. waiting around for something new to drop is a waste IMO.

7d over d90

7d over d90

Yes. Switch. most of the frustrating element of the d90 go away. The image does not jelly if you just lighly tap it. You can set exposure so you don't have constantly try to find that sweet spot and hit your ae lock. Just so much less frustrating. Plus it doesn't over heat as fast and has a longer run time. The image is beautiful and with some fast primes you really get what you are looking for with shooting dslr. I really dig mine.

Yeah I figured everybody would go with the 7D.

Im sell my D90 on ebay next week and buy from bh photo

thx everybody

Made the change..

Made the change..

I bought the 7D with a 50mm 1.4 lens. I still have the d90 until i'm sure. It was strange to get used to at first but i definitely like the feel and the weight of the 7d better.

But.. i did a simple test this morning. i shot some pics inside my house at 800 ISO, 1.8 and 1/125 on both cameras.

the canon had the 50mm 1.4
the nikon had a 50mm 1.8

Now, i was only viewing them in the lcd on the cameras - but the nikons photos typically seemed more in focus and much brighter.

Is that normal? or could something be wrong with the canon?

Keeping my d90 for stick work and backup. It works great if you know how to handle it. Gonna get the d7. I get a nice look with HVX200 and d90 together.

Well most of the "customers" could give a s#@! about 1080HD and full controls. They can buy a Nano with HD video now and post in on YouTube. Nikon just announced a bunch of Coolpix with 720HD.
Nikon is selling more cameras around the world and don't think they "underestimate what people want". It might not be what the indie film crowd wants but we don't amount to much in sales. Most people don't want to fiddle around with manual controls. I really hope Nikon pulls something out of their hat that we will all like, but to say they don't know what their customers want is not right.

I switched. Bought a GH1 and a 7D. Everything is better except I got used to Nikon's focus wheel (being backwards) from the beginning. Also I do kinda miss those avi's, if exposed on camera correctly they really really look stunning.

Manual control makes Nikon a no go for work, but it is a useable camera for lots of situations. The picture's character is really nice, the saturation and skin tones look good on nikon.

An interesting discussion point. I have often wondered how significant the video community's parcentage is of DSLR sales of those models with video.

It seems that Canon at least has adopted a very pro video marketing aspect at least with their "moving photography" ads that go from still images to moving video. I'm hopeful that the improvements on the 7D from the 5D indicate an active interest on their part to continue improving on future DSLRs with video.

It seems all I've heard about Nikon is that they are not doing the same as far as video is concerned. But again, whether or not that relates to a significant portion of their main customer base is unclear.

I just made the jump.

Got my 7D used with a 16gb card and 50mm 1.8 for $1400

sold my d90 and nikon glass and made $300 off the sale, w000t!

Loving the 7D so far.

Any current 7D owner seeing any AF issues that I keep reading about?
