D90 firmware update same for D5000

If/when the D90 gets a firmware update, would it be the same for the D5000, since it's essentially the same internals?

And if it wasn't, could someone find a way to hack it to update the d5000?

Thanks!

They probably wouldn't, D90 is higher in the food chain, that is assuming Nikon does it in the first place lol.

with the GH1 and the firmware update from canon, it looks like Nikon is running out of place in the HDSLR market. They better come out with something soon, or at least some news.

they better do...
i shot some clips with the 5D today and it's like a dream with the manual Control.
Nikon NEEDS 1080p with full manual control or the game is lost.

the game

This is a fallacy. If they didn't come out with anything and released a D400 next year, it will sell like crazy and they could leapfrog right back to the top.

From a company's perspective they have made nothing but right decisions. Everyone who bought a D90 for video was aware of all its weaknesses. They don't owe us anything. Many here seem to forget that. For that price it would surprise me, if they'd offer a firmware update. My guess is that they'll release a more expensive model with all the goodies we want...

I would disagree, because by then there will be more competition and chances are they will lose the head start that panasonic and canon are getting. Of course, if they release a good product, then it will sell. But the HDSLR bandwagon craze is happening now, not next year. By then Scarlet will be released and people will be looking for the next best thing.

Now if they release a 2k HDSLR with uncompressed image, no jello and 24p with manual controls, sure they would be back in the game, but how long will it take, and will people wait? My guess is no.

Definitely, but what we would need from them, to gain interest in the target consumer that wants to get something soon since the GH1 and Mark 2 have released specs that people are asking for, is to release at least some specs or give us hints of what is to come instead of this rumor jargon.

It doesnt make sense to me for them to release a brand new camera and then not support it. I bet we will see something sometime....maybe....I hope.

Well, I have decided to wait. I love the D90, despite its handicapped nature, and I am invested in their lenses. The GH1 and Canon aren't alluring enough to sway me versus a future Nikon hdslr with improved functions and control.

If I need something that I don't own, I will rent in the meantime.

This is just the beginning and their will be camera turnover until there are some defacto champions that have an extended shelf life. I would rather Nikon took their time to get it right.

I can wait for the D90 update too (if one does exist). Also something to think about - Panasonic and Canon have their big time HD camcorders (HVX and XL H1), so releasing a 5D MII firmware update and creating the GH-1 with super awesome feature for video is a high risk for them - mainly because us "indie" filmakers can produce nice creative works with limited budgets, somewhat cripple-feature cameras, and some enginuity.
But it still baffles me as to why Nikon doesn't just put the smack down on them all and release either a sweet firmware update to their HDSLR's, or just come out and make a sweet-ass HD prosumer level camcorder that could accept Nikon primes etc. (for DOF). That would be too awesome.

I wonder something else.... Why replace the CCD sensor of D80 with a CMOS on D90, knowing that the jello effect is only due to CMOS data read? (Red One or SI-2K are CCDs). Is that because they plan something big in the future? like a full-frame CCD camera (no jello), with proper sound module(optional), and a better codec? (I would like 50mbs 4:2:2). Card space is not an issue this days....

Well first of all, the Red One and the SI-2K are not CCD cameras, they are CMOS. And the Red One does have jello (Check out Southland if you don't believe me). Second of all, a CMOS is cheaper to manufacture and requires less cooling than a CCD. I don't think companies will return to CCD but try to develop the CMOS sensor and make it better. The D90 is a still camera first and foremost. The video is just something extra they put in at the last moment.

yep, checked it out.... I've heard it wrong and didn't bother to look after. Thanx Well I guess my HVX-Letus rig will still be handy for at least 2 years. I was just so excited to have a small form camera to shoot with in harsh enviroment. I will purchase a D5000 for shooting in forrest off-road cars and hope for that firmware update to ease the filming process.(I have a full bag of fast Nikon lenses)

He probably made that comment because the D5000/D90 are reknown for having a lot of jello-wobble so if the forest off-road cars is about racing fast then you would just be getting wobbly and leaning-wobble footage all day. I watched the trailer though so you might be able to use the D5000 since it's not all about fast racing.

Best,
Andy

yes, I will use it for the interviews, camping shots, timelapses (night sky), timelapse clouds over hills, and when necessary even cars, and as you see, a winching car in the forrest is not Dakar rally :)
off-road not equal rally-ride.
