D90 + extreme lowlight...

I tried it out and was wondering, if it´s possible to get pictures absolutely free of noise. And at the same time no waves and flickering caused by fluorescent lights. I didn´t get it under control => to avoid the waves one have to pan more in the shadow area of the scene - so, automatically Iso will go up + noise is rising:

Anybody knows a solution? Or is the only way to push the EV all the way down to get crushed blacks?

cool stuff, although the starting footage is really dark. I'm not sure of a solution, other than just work with what you can, use apertures of around F 1.4, etc.

Was that sky superimposed at the end of the clip?

Yeah, definitely this would be the best solution. For this extreme lowlight a f2.0 is apparently not good enough. I have to buy a better one..

Yes, I did it with 1 mask in After Effects. But as I said, very quick + dirty. The sky is only 1 pic that I animated a bit with 2 Keyframes. I came up with the idea by this clip:

You can find the nikkor 50mm 1.4 D for pretty cheap, especially used, because with the new G, I'm sure a lot of D's will be on the used market. And the D is better for video because it has the aperture ring.

guys careful how "old" you buy one....if it's not AI, you just wasted money or you'll be modifying the lens to fit your d90.

Definitely, but the two I bought this morning are OK. Im not an expert on Nikon lenses, but the dealer I know very well. So, I know he`s trustworthy. He gave me a guaranty of 6 month for both.

The 50mm looks like this one, but without the little silver thing with the 2 screws:

Until now it works like a charm - hopefully for a long time...

you can mod pre-ai lenses yourself with a file, google for instructions. some camera shops also do the mod. the nikon factory ai-d mod kits are very rare.

Meanwhile I uploaded a new clip a moment ago. I did the lowlight-shots early this morning:

Very nice. You have great slow camera moves. That slow rack as the train pulled in was perfect.

What are you using to set your exposure before locking/LV?

I'd love to see the full res version - it looks like the focus on your full image is great.

Thx - I try to give my best. But sometimes it´s very hard + annoying :-). To set the right exposure I use every available light in the surrounding area to get rid of waves + noise. But it don´t works always as good as my liking. Also I keep a very small LED-Light with me if there is no other + better useable light. The problem with the LED is: you can´t assess the situation of waves + flicker all the time.
