My D4 is coming next week and I do not have enough money yet.

I dont think you will be getting your D4 next week somehow ;-)

But so far the D800 has blown me away for the quality reading of such a large sensor. If the D4 can better this then I'll be one happy camper.

Not sure if this has been posted but this is a music video shot on the D800:

I dpnt know, what do you think of this compared to the MKII in terms of image, I think the canon has a warmer feeling to it, this looks more to me like a digital picture in movement ( so does canon but in a better way) , I dont know , is probably soon to compare

this is the first negative thing I have heard about the Nikon when it comes to skin tone:

http://photolegacy.wordpress.com/2012/02/09/163/

Writer says the skin tone is a tad yellow. He is most likely accustomed to a very high level of accuracy. There is a TIFF download of one of his shots. Seems to me a D90 user would be happy with these results, while a seasoned pro or image aficionado may find fault.

Looking at the TIFF, it looks a bit like Canon's Landscape picture style.

Thoughts:

- LCD looks bit underwhelming

- Samples look Fantastic. But the bad spots of a lens... it SHOWS. 90% of the peeps buying this won't be shooting on Zeiss primes + tripod. Like the wedding photographers using 5dmk2 with le suck autofocus & "fixing" the sharpness in post... and that's "a bit" lower rez than 36mp... Where the next problem comes in...

- Noise. 3200 looks decent at best. I guess all the fanboys screaming about "Canon and their megapixel race" has gotten something new to think about.

Oh I'm whining -- not at all! Camera looks amazing & always liked the Nikon IQ. I'll happily swtich my Canon glass for an amazing landscape/timelapse DSLR. But I'm not gonna afford glass that is good enough, so yeah, guess picking up a new D700 while they're stll around isn't that bad of an idea either...

edit: Is the girl on the left available?

She is only available for those with a D800 and Leica primes.

Seriously? That's a worthless comparison. why?
1) Both women have painted thier skin with makeup! Are we idiots?
2) too many unknown shooting variable
3) They should both be holding color swatch targets at the chest.
get real folks.

It may be a worthless comparison, but not really worth going after it. I wrote: "...it looks a bit like canon's landscape picture style." Key part of that sentence is "a bit", which means "not much". Also, the context of my writing intended to show that the "negative" comments on the D800 were coming from a very exacting professional, though I admit, the way I express myself, at times, is in the negative, and so I occasionally sound like I am putting something down when in fact, I am not.

I do appreciate your passion for accuracy in camera comparisons, and I hope you extend that to your understanding of context and the English language.

To sincerely answer, what I assume was a rhetorical question: I posted it to show what it was that triggered my association to the comparison. It was my own amusement which led me to do it. Not compulsory duty to educate. I was already working in photoshop, and it was perhaps too easy to produce the side by side. It happened before I could even think about it.

I read last night (somewhere, can't actually remember where) that some behind the scenes material on the 'Through the Lens' video about the blind boy showed a Ki Pro attached to the D800. I wonder if that explains the lack of moire we saw on the dad's jacket?

As an owner of a Samurai, I can tell you that shooting ProRes would not have any effect on moire.

Right, I've been at the BVE Expo here in London and every year like most of the people they get down there to sort out questions and decide what it can be sold or upgraded on our rigs apart of attending to some interesting seminars.

I had in mind sell my HVX200 and get the AF-101 but that idea changed dramatically when I found that the Nikon guys were there showcasing the D800 and the D4.
I grabbed the D800 straight away and the first impresions were good, not too light nor heavy, it had a 35mm Nikon Nikkor lens attached to it and a HDMI recorder.

Since one of the technical guys was there, so was I asking questions at the same time I was uisng the D800

- It records 1980x1080 25/30 1280x720 24,25,30,50,60 in .MOV H.264 at 200 mbps (It's being reviewed by the BBC to become or not broadcast approved)
- Record in 1280x720 won't give you more sharpness or extra resolution due to the way the chip is being used
- The image looks kinda zoomed (something like 1080 in the Samsung Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note) and that can be more or less modified in the settings by choosing the way the chip is used
- The D4 has quicker response in light changes and performing in low light against the D800
- They state that the chip inside is even bigger and better than the one in the Arri cameras
- To get the best quaility out of the D800/D4 when filming you will need to use an external HDMI monitor recorder using the uncompressed HDMI output
- They said that the video quality is a "bit" better than the best DSLR from Canon
- The D800 will be released at the end of march and the D4 in april

I think this is the real deal for a lot of people, maybe not for everyone.

...I think this is the real deal for a lot of people, maybe not for everyone.

Almost enough to make me switch from Panasonic back to Nikon on my next upgrade - the uncompressed HDMI out, the headphone jack - it ticks almost all of the boxes (except for the swiveling LCD they had on the D5100, but I could live without that).

Then I saw the 20 minute continuous video limit. Can't live without unlimited continuous recording in a video-capable camera. Especially one that costs $3000 :-(

Some D800 samples do look better to me than a D3 at 6400 ISO.
Most normal clips are a lot less than 20 minutes.
Restarting a clip after 20 minutes can be done almost instantly.
The D800 can be start/stopped wirelessly.

It would want to be more than "a bit better" than the current Canon DSLRs.

big +1 there.

I hope it is just that the guy who said that is slow and thinks Canons are the pinnacle because they are the buzz word camera lately. Or maybe a humble Japanese under selling the accomplishments of the camera.

...but from the samples so far... it most likely is only a bit better. fingers crossed.

I don't know anything for certain yet but I suspect line skipping is still going to be an issue. Looks like it's going to be a 1Dx, 5DMKIII, or FS100 for me. After 3 years what advances are Nikon offering? A headphone jack. What else?
