D800

If it has the quality of video it should (it's freakin v3.0 for Nikon now, for pete's sake) then this may just stop me from abandoning Nikon and getting the 5Dm3 when it comes out.

I have my fingers crossed but I'm not too hopeful, tbh. I really don't think Nikon has a clue when it comes to video.

Sadly... +1 to that.

Nikon Rumors thinks the D800 is around the corner:
http://nikonrumors.com/2011/12/08/nikon-d800-commercial-was-filmed-in-chicago.aspx/

A commercial shoot was done in Chicago for the New Nikon D800, and they used 10 D800's to shoot it.

Sounds interesting. If they are really going with a 36MP sensor, I hope the video stacks up, and that the low light is decent enough to use for documentary. Doubt they have audio out though, which is sad, and would be a potential missed opportunity by Nikon if they don't include it. But that is speculation!

Hi,

I'm looking forward to it. I'm hoping for audio monitoring, live histograms or better viewing of RGB - video level strength - it's hard right now to know what kind of signal you have, better moire and anti aliasing is given, needs to be asked for, so is longer file handling even if done by proxies a al GH2 multiple file handling - that really wouldn't matter.

I've shot quite a few things with the D7000 and my confidence level with the camera has grown somewhat, and I've added the GH2 to the mix, too, and frankly, it is an easier camera to work will, but the footage is better with the D7000.

I own the converters to use all my Nikon lenses, so I can mix an match and it isn't a problem to do that.

Plain vanilla, stand'em up and shoot'em jobs like weddings should go easily with the GH2 as the lock down, and the D7000 as the roving camera. Us the TASCAM D100 in post for audio. It has worked in recitals. Our commercial work is done on the D7000.

Selling the video cameras was the biggest step...:Drogar-KnockedOut(D

Our biggest customers haven't tried the new DSLR, with me yet. If the Outdoors Channel or Discovery or CNN fires me... It was just meant to be.

My best,

Mike

Okay, another 99% update from Nikon rumors: http://nikonrumors.com/2011/12/16/updated-nikon-d800-specs.aspx/

Will be sold as two different versions, one with anti-alias filter and one without.... the anti-anti-aliasing filter camera. i joke.

Nice to see Nikon getting 1080/30/25p and 720/60p, etc. Would be nice to get 1080/60p, but with the C300 and Scarlet not do anything there either, I will withhold my judgement (despite the fact that sony and panasonic are doing it.) Maybe Nikon can give us CLEAN HDMI OUT??? =) That'll give MacGregor something to brag about. Although, the mere mention of wanting certain features, as of late, seems to be used by marketing geniuses to withhold for another year for an easy up-sale feature.

Back to the point, Rumors Says...
36 MP sensor (7360x4912)
100% viewfinder coverage
Improved AF with face recognition – the D800 will still have 51 points AF point
CF+SD memory card slots
USB 3.0
ISO range: 100 – 6400, ISO LO @ 50 and ISO HI-2 @ 25600
The screen will be larger than 3 inches (probably 3.2 in.)
The D800 will not have built-in GPS
Expeed 3 processor
There will be two different D800 versions/models, one with the antialiasing filter removed
4 fps continuous shooting, about 6 fps in DX mode with optional battery pack
Video modes: 1080p/30/25/24 and 720p/60/30/25/24
Headphone jack, can input from an external device such as a PCM sound recorder
86k pixels RGB sensor
200,000 shutter cycles
Uncompressed HDMI video out (just like the Nikon D4)

I'm looking forward to this announcement. If the video resolution is as sharp as the GH2, then I'm selling my canon. If not, then I'll just keep my canon and buy a GH2.

The canon videos have never really suited my shooting style and tastes - the compression made nice grain look awfully blocky and smudgy, and combined with the aliasing/moire made people look rubbery with no texture. The D7000 at least seemed to keep better definition in shadows and grain structure [see the Zacuto Shootout Part 1 shadowed test DESPITE the camera failing abit in technical charts] so hopefully the D800 retains this same look at the very least.

One thing Nikon does excel at is color.

As much as I hate being locked into a NIkon mount... I'd be interested if they actually do something about the video.

I don't get the anti-aliasing filter thing: are they pulling a 5D Anti-Moire filter deal? Sounds silly, to me, but who knows... 99% is a pretty bold statement!

Maybe they see an opportunity to sell their glass to a bunch of filmmakers like Canon's doing, so are gonna try to hit it sooner.

100% crops on Nikon Rumors, show D800 iso performance close up.

ISO1400

The performance is not mind blowing, but these are crops of a 36MP image, so it will be interesting the see how that translates into Video and print. There are typical color shifts between the varying iso levels.

In case you guys haven't checked it out, there is an interview with the motorcycle racer who was the rider for the Nikon next gen DSLR's short film in Chicago. It doesn't go into detail about the cameras, but the rider mentions some serious heavy weights in the industry shooting the Nikon promo, and had a budget $500K for the 3minute teaser. That gets us hoping that they have revamped their video functions! Here's to hoping in the New Year! =)

Here's the Nikon Rumors post with the link to the podcast interview. Let it load a bit and skip to 2:28:28 on the timeline. The interview is with TT moto racer Mark Miller, who ended up with the job by chance!

I sincerely hope this camera sucks... but only because I don't want to get stuck with a nikon mount. LoL.

Sounds like it could finally be a good offering from Nikon, the only freakin' company with no high or low end to protect in the video market.

I actually hope this WILL be killer, because then I can scrap the Canon EF lens adapters from my Nikons and actually use the Nikon lenses as intended haha.

Yeah it seems odd that Nikon haven't capitalised on this yet. Nikon pretty much dominate the consumer market and they really do hire alot of marketing with music artists and famous actors like Takuya Kimura, Robbie Williams, Ashton Kutcher etc...

Is there something we're missing? Patent rows and infringement laws with the market? Is someone taking bribes or is being threatened so as to not to pursue?

I'm optimistic, I'm hoping they're just testing the waters and boiling up for something huge...

I think it is more a technological thing. They had no prior knowledge of the video world. I hope they do us a d3/d300 launch like 4 years ago, where in one launch they completely beat the Canon cameras that had ruled the digital camera since early 2000's. The comment on the motorcycle guy is very encouraging because they really seems set on the video side of the camera promotion for the launch. As many I am questioning if it is for the D4 or D800, because the setting fast and low light are closer to a d4 type of camera than a slower high resolution one.

I have big hope as a Nikon shooter that they will this time take this market by storm. Proper down-scaling (gh2 alike), 10 bit and 422, log base output would already sway a big part of the market. In will be happy for 1080p for this time, it would be very nice to get some different aspect ratio also like a 2500 x 1080p anamorphic or 4/3 format for anamorphic lens. It is strongly rumored that they will have uncompressed output so lets hope, I have been disappointed until now. But since I have my gh2 I am less worried.

It's official, 36.3 MP, Uncompressed HDMI Output, Dedicated Headphone Jack, FX Mode (Full frame), and DX Mode (Sensor Crop Mode? I guess). Hummm, This is gonna bring nightmares to Canon team this week. Can't wait to see uncompressed footage from this Baby, also how is the low light performance, because of the smaller pixels...well, let's wait if is really worth $2999. only time will tell, as usual.

Nice, did you record with an external device? I was looking for aliasing, moire and jello but didn't notice anything, btw good job.
