D800 Flat Profile...

Hi everyone,
i just received my D800 and was wondering if someone has already created a flat profile to use with it (something like TassinFlat).

The footage that I've seen straight out of the D800 is great but it could always benefit from a bit more dynamic range.

Thanks in advance,
E.C.

will this work on my d600? i have modified my standard picture profiles to get as flat of an image as possible but i miss the technicolor and flaat11 from my t2i

With the help of a D600 user that contacted me, I checked that Flaat for the D800 works just as well in the D600.
I haven't "certified" Flaat for the D600, though, since I'd have to run some tests myself to be sure no funny stuff is going on in any aspect of the image. But I'm nearly sure it will be OK (unlike the D7000, which seems to have completely different in-camera image processing).
And I doubt I'll ever get to test it myself: I'm pretty busy right now, and not really interested in this particular camera...

I've tested the Flaat profile on my D600 in several different lighting conditions and I feel like it's a little hard to grade compared to taking the portrait profile and jacking down the contrast/saturation on that. Namely, I find it hard to get the colors right for skin tone - seems to my eyes a little orange. I'd be interested to see what other people say though, since I'm by no means an expert in video grading, and I'm sure there are loads of variables at play here.

If anyone's interested, I can send them my test footage to check if it's all normal.

Did you do a side-by-side test? How did you set all the contrast/saturation settings when shooting with Flaat?
Because colors should be basically the same: Flaat is just a modification in the light-response-curve of Portrait, I didn't play with color at all (I mean: flaat is just Portrait with a very specific curve applied, to make it near-log; this shouldn't affect colors, only contrast).

Might of been asked before - I use Flaat 10 on my D800 - can the profile be loaded and used on the D7000 to the same effect?

It can be loaded and used on the D7000, but it is not optimal: the internal image processing in the D7000 works differently. You can use Flaat if you want to match the colors with a D800 or a D600 (yes, that one seems to work well with Flaat), but you'll end up with a more contrasty image on the D7000.

Nice work Tony. Very soft look but still good detail. What was your work flow in terms of Color grading and correction?

Thanks PAVP!

For color correction, I bring the footage into Premiere Pro and use Magic Bullet Colorista to do a basic color correction. After I'm done and happy with my edit, I then export an EDL and use Speedgrade to create the look I want. The power windows in Speedgrade are awesome too! :)

It looks great... until you show the stills.
It's striking how much better the background looks in the stills than in the video. Same camera, same sensor, the data is there, but the processing kills it before you can do anything about it. Shame on you, Nikon!

Yeah, it's no cinema camera that's for sure. :( The smaller dynamic range just makes it a stark contrast...

Funny you noticed the photographer was using a D800 as well!

I was thinking of starting some kind of movement for asking Nikon to enable 2.5k recording or even 4K like other manufacturers have done. It seems to me that since they don't have a Pro Video div. to worry about that there's not much deter them from doing something like that. They have great sensors to work with and likely would only have to make some minor changes. Perhaps even the hardware they have now could handle it. If not then go ahead and make a special D800 or D4 model that is dedicated to video.

Well, I think eventually they have to come up with something to 'compete' with the 1D-C, I don't know about any 2.5 or 4k coming anytime soon - but definitely a true 1080 with 60p would be in order along with some sort of Nikon Log. If you guys are Nikon lovers like me and follow Nikonrumors - earlier this week they posted the probability of a 'D4x' - basically a D800/E in a D4 body. If true, this basically may be a 1D-C counterpart.
