They could use a better codec, if the processor allows it, but that's about it. For anything beyond that, they'd need new sensors. The current ones are not designed for ultra-fast readout; if you put the D800 sensor in a D4X body, it won't be able to do what the 1DC does, it will still have to line-skip (like the D800 does) (actually, you can force it to read the full sensor, but then rolling shutter gets 2x or 3x as bad; look at the D5200).
