D750 Sound Issue

Hello there,

the 750 is a great little camera overall, superb stills. Tomorrow is my first shoot with it and I'm glad I won't have to record any audio (not that I would rely on internal recording but you never know and having a stereo mic in there, and a good one too, is precious). And that's because I find that the audio recorded in this dslr picks up a ticking noise from what would be an internal component. To demonstrate this I just shot this little video (youtube 480 .mp4). I guess you have to pump up the volume on your stereo or speakers to discern the issue.

This appears in all settings, whether it's set on Wide or Narrow (for voice as Nikon states), auto level or manual.

I'll wait a little before I handle my camera to Nikon, I have things to shoot anyway and it's going to take ages to get it back. I'm a little frustrated is all. If anyone has heard of anything similar please give some feedback.

I can hear it. Yeah, it sounds like some kind of control voltage from a mechanical function.
But at what level? How far down below 0db is this noise observable at? That's the real question. I can;t tell what the relative volume of your background noise is without a reference sound - like a person speaking at a normal level in front of the camera.
So far, ALL DSLRs have shown to produce some kind of noise on their internal audio recorders if you listen down low enough.

Try this test:
Find the quietest room you can and put a person about 5 or 6 feet in front of the camera and have them speak at a normal volume - but with pauses in between sentences. Then we can all easily hear, without getting a metering, where this noise is relatively.

Danke.

I would not recommend to record sound in the camera if you are trying to make a professional project. Avoid it as much as possible. They are not designed to do it properly. It should always be done with a good audio recorder.

jdohnddee: I agree as I already stated above.

DPStewart, while I understand your point, I have no such experience (such an issue with sound) with Canon Dslr's. I am just about to edit the piece I shot yesterday. Guess what. We needed sound after all. Two people talking. But, it was no more than 20 seconds and I can work magic in post. So, I will be posting examples shortly. Thank you for your replies.

Yeah, we need someone else with a d750 to check this out, because if it's not on all cameras then yours needs to get back to Nikon right away.
Anyone?

Hey guys, have you heard anything from Nikon about it?
I have the same sound on my D750. I've tested the problem and found out:
- first, it's typical for all D750 (at least I found a lot of examples with that sound);
- second, there's a way to cope with this issue. As it turned out the sound is the sound of writing to SD card. While using hi-speed UHS-I cards that use higher voltage for writing speed boost it produce that sound. I tested video recording with old Class 4 card and there wasn't any noise. Also class 4 writing speed was enough to record 1080@60 with high quality settings.

Could you test it with any non UHS-I cards you have? Unfortunately I don't have neither 6 class, nor 10 class to test if they can be used with no noise.

PS I set writing videos on second slot with 4 Class card, and photos on the 1st slot where I put Sony UHS-I card. That works fine for me.

Just a note, this regards the D7100 but may apply to the 750 -

When I record on set, I'm currently using a Tascam DR 60D. I usually run a line out to the mic in of the camera to get clearer synch, and I tend to gain-stage everything just to do things right.

What I've found in editing though - if I have all my levels set optimally, I rarely use the Tascam track. Just the preamp of the thing sounds fine, crisp, and low-noise on the Nikon. Feed it a good signal with healthy levels and no peaks (I really like the limiter in the Tascam, it's not brickwall but you really don't hear it working) and it's been just fine for me (I do use some nice mics though).
