D7100 available for preorder

In the GH2 vs D7100 comparo, I liked the D7100 image much better, more pleasing and organic, and it has enough resolution.
GH2 just seems so crushed, overly contrasty, more electronic and hard looking - with an artifcial kind of sharpness
What comparison are you looking at? Thanks.

D7100 vs GH3
Since kit lenses are used here, it is most likely the GH3 lens has additional sharpening and processing as we know :)

2 Frames from Panavision 65mm - not overly sharp, but with a certain depth, detail and feel I have been looking for in a camera. I think the Nikons get closer to that look than the GH2 :)

Beautiful images. They could be sharper, but that would probably make them harsher too, and I think that's part of the GH2's problem.

Hi
I should have my camera in about 3 days, I am pretty excited.
I read this about the d7100
I am interested in the 60p, so it is available in 1280X720, right?
What do they mean here , "Available only when 1.3x (18x12) is selected for image area; sensor output is about 60 or 50 fps" ?

  • 1920 x 1080; 60i (59.94 fields/s)/50i (50Available only when 1.3x (18x12) is selected for image area; sensor output is about 60 or 50 fps fields/s)*
  • 1920 x 1080; 30p (progressive), 25p, 24p
  • 1280 x 720; 60p, 50p
  • Actual frame rates for 60p, 50p, 30p, 25p and 24p are 59.94, 50, 29.97, 25 and 23.976 fps respectively; options support both ★high and normal image quality
*Available only when 1.3x (18x12) is selected for image area; sensor output is about 60 or 50 fps

Not 100% sure, but I think it is as follows:
1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p30, 720p50, 720p60 --> you use the full sensor (total crop=1.52x)
1080i50, 1080i60 --> you youse just the central 1.3x crop of the sensor (total crop around 2x) (and IIRC somebody said it's pretty soft too: better stick to 720p60)

The UPS guy brought my camera yesterday. I shot about 500 photos in about 2 hours working with different settings. I tried manual and auto. I own the D70 and D80, and the pictures from the Auto mode on the D7100 are just beautiful. Videos are great, I need to experiment more. When you hold a good video camera, it usually has stabilization. Maybe I am wrong, but this camera does not have that, so moving family video shots can get you a little car sick. Use a tripod or slow your movement down a little, and all is good. This camera is just wonderful.

Congratulations for your new camera! You really need the lenses with VR. And even with that you have to hold the camera very tight. Have fun with your new toy!

I use this lens a lot. It is a nice all around lens.Nikon AF-s Nikkor 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED DX VR. Do you recommend anything different , like smaller F-stop. Or VR2.
thanks

That's a great lens. I don't really know how much difference VR2 is really making on the new lenses. I have to check that out when I get my new cam. I think one of the biggest differences is on the ability to stabilize the camera, either with a rig or tripod or extremely good hand grip which many people with experience can do very well. The problem with steadiness increase of course as you go into higher focal lengths. Also keeping shutter speed at 40 or 50 helps a lot I think. And of course plenty of experimentation to get it just right!

So does this mean the D7100 needs a VAF? I'm sick of choosing between moire and softness, I think I'm just gonna have to get a C100 and be done with it.

For stills, the 18-200 is very soft on the D7100 (as you probably know by now). For video, it's as sharp as anything. For video purposes only, the main benefit to the more expensive lenses is the larger f stop. For stills, the difference between the 18-200 and say the 17-55, 70-200, 70-300, 35 1.8, etc. is huge.

Just spent 9 days filming with the D7100 without any moire at all. Shooting Neutral sharpness 0 detail -1 at 200 Iso or 400 Iso and adding some post sharpening with Tonalizer the results are stunning. In terms of noise, colour, detail and DR.

D7100 is definitely has more resolution than the D5200, as far as photos go
But video doesnt require as much, so not sure if you will even notice

The difference the OLPF makes can be seen when viewing the top pair of DPReview's photos in full resolution. In the D7100 photo, you can see colored bands of moire on the silver coin between Mickey Mouse and Pluto. In the D5200 photo, there is no visible moire, but the edges are not quite as sharp. This cinches it for me, as I have little tolerance for chroma moire.

I want to see this. Been watching Panasonic GH series for two years now and am about to jump ship after the GH3 fizzle
