I still see the horizontal fixed pattern noise in the blacks at all iso levels and in M an S modes...

I did some noise tests, the banding noise is there but I found out that fairly clean results can be obtained at 200 ISO, neutral, 0 sharpness and detail -1 or even -2. The image can be easily sharpened in post. The next cleanest image is at 400 ISO while 250 and 320 are pretty bad.

GH2 clear resolves more, could you find a word bear on 7100 footage?) I dicided to spot something to compare, could read it on GH2 footage
this test makes me think that 7100 resolves about same as 5200

What ISO's are you shooting at?

The d7100 is much sharper then the 5200 and the GH2 codec performs much better with its higher bit rates. I'm going to check out the d7100 with some external recorders latter today and report back.

Aside from sharpness and color balance, the D7100 has a much flatter gamma curve than the GH2. And the ability to adjust that gamma curve with custom picture profiles makes the Nikon the most versatile available-light video camera I've seen.

This is a great thread, quickly just want to know if you think it is is safe to buy on amazon, or where did you get your camera? And did you guys mostly buy just the body or with the kit lens. thanks

Shame about the FPN but there are workarounds. Hopefully the lads can crack the firmware, add some magic lantern features and a 150Mbps intra codec and we have a winner! A Ninja should really mix it up with the big boys.

Totally agree, after a few days of playing around with the D7100 I can say I love the images you can get out of it. Canon C300, 1DC, Red and Alexa are certainly better, pity they don't sell for the same price.

Hi, I read most of the posts and watched some D7100 review videos online. I have some questions for people that might have time to answer.
Someone said on the D7100 there is spot-white balance. What is that exactly?
What are you setting your sharpness detail at? I read some are setting the dial at 1. Or maybe it depends first on your lens and settings?

Curious to know if you could change aperture in live view on a smartphone or ipad and see results live? What about white balance. I ask this because from what I read, you can't change these in live view.

Here is a long review video but with some interesting points.

Here is some of his neg points.

No spot focus for nature photos, but is it needed with the other focus option? 51 points.

a little yellowish-green with auto white balance in rough lighting. Raw is not a big deal.

Auto focus on video mode, maybe hunting a little bit? He said it is not a big deal.

Setting up white balance for video. How would you do it?

Positive results.
To many for me to list here.
Crop mode looks awesome to use! But not recommended for video mode he said.

(I don't have the D7100 yet, my comments here is from this video- and my comments may be incorrect.)

Is B&H a good place to buy from and do business with?

thanks

another nice review

Yes, I've spent thousands with them, and never had a problem. They are probably the most reputable photo retailer out there. You just have to plan your purchases around all the Jewish holidays and the sabbath which is more than annoying on so many levels.

Indeed, looking at the D7100 vs D5200 comparison, it has to be the same sensor, the lines are all on top of each other:
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Ca...brand)/Nikon/(appareil2)/850|0/(brand2)/Nikon

And I'm not even sure about the OLPF thing: the dpreview studio samples are out too, and even on 24 Mpix stills I can't see a lot of a difference:
http://www.dpreview.com/previews/nikon-d7100/5
(it could be because a soft lens is acting as an OLPF, but they're using a 50mm f/1.4 set at f/8; the alternative is that the OLPF in the D5200 didn't need to be very strong anyway, and getting rid of it didn't make a difference)

In the GH2 vs D7100 comparo, I liked the D7100 image much better, more pleasing and organic, and it has enough resolution.
GH2 just seems so crushed, overly contrasty, more electronic and hard looking - with an artifcial kind of sharpness

2 Frames from Panavision 65mm - not overly sharp, but with a certain depth, detail and feel I have been looking for in a camera. I think the Nikons get closer to that look than the GH2 :)
