D7000 available now at Best Buy

Don't be surprise when they start applying the technology towards the video camera set up ala AF100. They will keep making news in the field.

Yeah - just like this camera Nikon will implement Af-100 technology when everyone else has moved onto something better. They play catch-up, they don't innovate.

They play catch-up, they don't innovate.

And make millions upon millions of dollars in the process. They don't need to innovate really, they just have to make good products whenever they are ready and make a bundle in the process. Is simple really.

Who cares how much they make? Justin Bieber makes a lot of money too.. that doesn't mean he's good.
This isnt an equity trading forum... its for film/video makers. We should be discussing their product offerings not the money they make.

the money per se is obviously not the point, it's that their business is more based on quality than innovation, always has been.

Nikon, Canon, et al, are in business to make money, if somebody doesn't like that, well, tough. They make their products based on how much profits they will get from them, period. They make their products at their own timetable, not any individual's in particular. Nikon took its time between the D90 and the D7000 because that is what they needed to do. Unfortunately electronic equipment is not done with a magic wand. As proven by what has happened with Scarlet. It is one thing saying we want/need a camera that does this or that and another thing making it a reality. Nikon is an intrinsic part of the history of image creation around the world. There stills film history is well documented. Now slowly but surely their contribution to the digital age is going to be as powerful and meaningful. Have no doubts about it.

Just like Apple...and they make a good nut too!

What????
Apple is incredibly innovative and an absolute leader when it comes to user interfaces. They lead in making the complex simple, and customers flock to them because of that.

Caballero - you're vision is clouded by Nikon love, I guess.

this is getting silly, apple is not innovative in exactly the same way as nikon isn't, they've never pushed the limits of technology even though they've always released products that felt fresh and that people wanted. for example, pre-emptive protected memory multi tasking has been around since the 80's but the mac didn't get it until 2001, and the iphone not fully so even now. why? because technology also means a lot of problems, and people love the products and buy them anyway. there will always be people who get frustrated by that, as a long time mac user i've often been one of them, but it's how it is. it's not that apple *couldn't* release a multi tasking os in '92, they just didn't want to. of course it wasn't until apple started making good computers with a good os that they became really successfui, it's not just that they introduced steel blue plastic and funky scroll wheels.

The only thing that matters is what you can buy now, and IMO nikon are off the curve - no 25FPS for my pal world

But IMO nikon can will and do catch up, the D3 when it finally came about (after years of no FF35 offering from nikon) really was a DSLR still camera to end all DSLR still cameras, sure better MP and ISO are surely now available but it killed my upgrade desires stone dead, its a client pleaser

Thats why 90% of my glass is still nikon because it will - I guess - pay off in the long term to stick with them

Don't be silly.
I never asserted that Apple was innovative on the technology/hardware side. They are, however, phenomenally innovative on the User Interface side... thats why they sell a gajillion units.
Are there better mp3 players from a technology perspective? Yep.
Are they easier to use? Nope.
Are there better phonesfrom a technology perspective? Yep.
Are they easier to use? Nope.
etc..

yeah isn't that what i said? that's not the kind of innovation referred to in this thread, and not the kind of innovation nikon is accused of not doing.
