D600 is out

no, not any more... Miguel said the price was C300-like

Got it :-) I think there was a joke. I've been outdated on the boards. Well, that would be the budget needed to really dream with one, to begin with, when released.

That said, it is possible to see the mistake to depreciate the HDSLR revolution, when it is the high-end to depreciate in 90%. This movement has ended with the 35mm film-like monopoly. First Miguel experiments with Jonathan's toy were only the prelude of all this.

Just watched the 1080p .mp4 from Vimeo on my 50" plasma, the quality really shows on that far more than on the computer screen. Terrific resolution, and really nice colour, the image looks great. I noticed a few slight banding issues, but that seems largely inevitable with a lot of 8-bit content (and would be fairly easily fixed by adding a bit of grain to the shots that need it).

The D600 is truly stunning. I love the fact that the HDMI is recordable and that the camera includes a really great kit lens.

Ok, sorry to pixel peep, I still think it is footage that rivals any other FF35 available.

These are some crop screenshots from the 1080p vimeo download, played in quick time player. Showing a weird highlight on the subjects forhead, and some moire' in the water:

The 1st screencap looks fine to me, nothing strange going on there.
The 2nd and 3rd, which are taken from the same shot, look really bad, and that particular shot doesn´t look anything like the rest of the film (much softer and with 300x more moire), so I tend to believe that was shot on 720p or at least something strange is going on there (DX mode?).

Sok, he'll pay for it every time he puts it on his shoulder.
No, the other way around: He gets paid (a lot) every time he puts a camera like the F35 on his shoulder.
MacGregor is one of the most inspiring DoPs from the early DVXuser days, I´m glad, he is playing with the big toys by now...

Maybe DX mode (but it could* also be a high ISO). Strangely, it doesn't produce the same results as the original FX. At least, with other Nikons.

* Well, it could be but apparently it is not. In this case. I watched it again and the guy is unlikely fully immersed into the shadows. It doesn't mean a lower ISO won't benefit anyway.

The highlight on the forehead is ok, because it is just the last light (very orange yellow) before sunset. You can see the yellow/orange light on the rest of his face and the clothes. I only saw the moire in this shot and another moment at the start where you see both brothers from the front and the beard one behind the camera. You can see it on the younger one camera shoulder strap for like 1 sec. Nothing extreme. I think that we will definitely have some moire in this camera, but as the d800 was already improvement compared to the earlier dslr models (except gh2). The D600 with less pixel could exhibit even less than the d800. I am hopeful to see some example of the D800 with the mosaic filter.

Canon 6D announcement today, specs look a lot like the D600.

1) properly rigged out the F35 will feel better handheld on ones shoulder than DSLR....The feel of an Alexa in handheld is still one of the better set ups.

2) the specs of the 6D do not hold a candle to the 600D...and I'm not speaking out of bias, just look at a side by side comparison. The 6D became a purely consumer aimed camera.

This review just came out, and it pretty much sums up how I feel about the D600 so far. The reviewers frustration from the idiotic inability to change aperture during live view mirrors my own. But it does seem like a very nice camera, and the reviewer points out that the video quality may even be better than the D800.

Yes just saw that. I think the smaller number of pixel makes for less line skipping so less chance of moire/aliasing. If Nikon had a chip technology like that in a 12 or 16 megapixel sensor we might get about gh2 low level moire/aliasing. Perhaps in an updated 16 megapixel apsc camera.

Are there any Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 lenses with a manual iris?

My (discontinued) 28-70 ED does. Close enough? They're readily available on ebay for around $1200. Not cheap, but a really great lens with complete auto or manual mode operability. Love it on my new D800.

Wow, great article. Really highlights the differences between the Nikon and Tokina zoom. Seems for HD video, there is less difference between the the two. Even the softening and lower contrast of the Tokina wide open could be considered and asset to some.

With autofocus, not too big size, tolerable price but can be better vs d6, are we talking November availabilty for the ones not preordering.

Noels: What country do you live in? I live in Oregon, in the USA. I just got off the phone with both my local Best Buy Store, as well as my local family owned camera store.

Both told me that they will have the D600 available for sale in their stores tomorrow: Wednesday Sept 19th.

One of these cameras now has my name on it! :)

So it looks like the D600 will beat both the Sony A99 and Canon 6D to market by quite a nice margin.

No repeat of the D800 availability disaster, thank God. I guess that Nikon must have learned a lesson from that.

Sure.

For some reason, 1D-C is natively lower res than 5DII/III to begin with.

Line skipping is the major infector of aliasing wherever it exists. So, the less the better. The ideal is nothing. Reason enough why 4K is a bless as same as upcoming aquisition devices such as the new C500.

When there's Ivy Bridge processors generation to claim «Multiple 4K video playback», there's no excuse anymore to preach for 1080p.
Not even mention 720p as I still read many here. Phew :lipsrseal
