D600 is out

As excited as I am for this, I'm not convinced it's performing differently to the D800. Same nice Nikon colours and tones...and I can't imagine the D800 handling highlights any worse than this...

Are these screen shots from the Youtube version, or the Vimeo version?

I am usually a bit wary of anything good Mac says about a new nikon. As he seems to appear out of nowhere and praise them.
I am really impressed with this camera. I think it captures better video than the D800 (less aliasing, maybe even a bit more resolution, and highlights seem to be a bit better) and for the price it is just crazy.
But he has had some more sobering reviews and insights into some of the nikons as he uses them, such as the D800 posterization issue. So, I believe him to be genuine.

This time, however, I am actually in agreement with him, even this early on. Even if the D600 is over priced a couple hundred dollars, it is still the cheapest full frame camera with potentially the best full frame video currently available. Hopefully the anti-aliasing filter will be available soon. (was just reading about how the Arri Alexa has a filter on the front of its sensor which blooms the highlights, creating a smoother highlight roll-off)

With the GH3 coming out, it looks to be the best (from what testers are saying) in codec and moire' of the sub $4K large sensor video solutions (minus the BMC?). Combine it with some nice voightlander f0.95 etc glass, and you have a baby RED, right? So, why am I still excited about a cheesy FF35 Nikon video codec and line skipping?

When everyone refers to FF35, they immediately start talking shallow depth of field. But you can get shallow dof on a m43 all day, if you want it. What people seldom talk about is FF35 perspective for when composing a shot. A 25mm may have the same field of view on a m43 as the 50mm does on a FF35, but the perspective of how objects fall off is completely different. The 25mm on the m43 will still have a slight wide angle effect, and objects will shrink more rapidly with distance, whereas the 50mm on an FF35 will maintain a fairly close to eye relation of near and far objects. I find this to have a huge (no pun intended) effect on composition and shooting. And it has nothing to do with wide fstops and shallow dof.

So, even with some moire' and line skipping, the D600 is one of the more exciting budget cameras to be announced this year for me. I am sad for the lack of time-code, but I shoot single camera 95% of the time anyway.

NOTE: a quick observation about the comparisons between Nikon d800 and Canon 5dmk3, is that they are often using the same exposure settings, even thought the Canon 5dmk3 is obviously darker as the ISO is used. So the Nikons tend to be a bit overexposed, making them look slightly less appealing on skin tone than they would be.

Sorry if I'm just stupid...but are you saying that you like the way the highlights look in the grabs you posted, or don't like them?

Given that the D800 is considerably higher resolution natively than the D600 (36Mp vs 24 Mp), how is it that the D600 could produce higher res video? It certainly doesn't appear (to me) to be true where the D800 vs the (24 Mp) 5DMkIII comparisons are concerned (Phillip Bloom's being the primary one I'm drawing this from). Are we implying that the D600 does a better job of extrapolating 1080x1920 from its sensor in spite of its nominally lower res?

In any case, I'm the very happy owner of a new D800, so it's all just an interesting discussion to me...

The resolution of both these sensors is so much higher than 1080p that it really comes down to how the camera is downscaling or line skipping, etc.

Right, exactly. That's what I was asking about re the assertion that the D600 is higher rez. So some are saying it downscales its 24Mp better than the D800 does its 36Mp?

Yeah I wasn't too clear on that...the way his face is clipping in the 1st grab surprises me. The 2nd shot really grabbed me when I was watching...I liked the tones...and I'm guessing I was feeling a little subconscious Game of Thrones love too.

James, these were from the downaloadable Vimeo clip.

Ok, I'm apparently still an idiot. Please, if you would be so kind, choose one of the following:

A) You like the look of the highlights better on the D800

or

B) You like the look of the highlights better on the D600

Thanks : )

Yeah, I am not sure now if you meant 'surprised' in a good or bad way either, haha. =)

Though, that seems typical of dslr and sunset light on skin with a more daylight WB, and then compressed for vimeo, that is my experience with the Canons, at least. Though, we'd really have to test it, ourselves to know for sure. I dislike it.

Sorry guys, I really should be doing better with my native language :)

That first grab, a magic hour shot...I wouldn't expect to blow out the skin like that. It's only in a small portion of the frame, but it's really ugly. There's been some mention that the dr looks better than the d800...what I was saying was that I'm not seeing it. James, you might be right with your wb call.

Of course this is all premature pixel peeping on my part...time will tell plenty.

Let's hope that is mostly vimeo 720p compression, but I have a feeling it is also just the ultra bright red light on the side of his face that is reacting differently than the subdued cooler darker light on the majority of his face. But, yeah, ugly.

Yes, Ted. That's what James meant (D600 is better for video than D800).

The resolution of both these sensors is so much higher than 1080p that it really comes down to how the camera is downscaling or line skipping, etc.
James is right.

With a saving of 900 bucks, it looks like a good deal to me.

PS: In any case, please, do not compare with GH3, because there's no possible comparison. D600 is of another league (v.g. FF35, HDMI output...) for a marginal difference of price, even if more than the double -- I'm sorry but certain things are a way worthy ;-)

Tastes. If all the world would love the same color, the camera manufacturers would be lazier but would make less profit ;-)

Tastes? Regarding dr? Now I'm the one that's confused.

When you say "PS: In any case, please, do not compare with GH3, because there's no possible comparison. D600 is of another league (v.g. FF35, HDMI output...)"...I disagree. They both take photos and both shoot video...if have a budget of $2k and I like both, I have to compare.

They are different cameras in almost everything, budget included ;-)

The GH3 so far looks like an excellent VIDEOcamera. Very sharp and not that much aliasing. The Nikon is much softer, but offers a whole different image, with a more natural tone curve and colorimetry. Call it more filmic if you want. So I think it´s compeltely legimit to compare these 2 cameras, and I feel the choice in the end will have to do more with taste than any other thing.

They'll both probably be bad cameras. That's why I gave up on DSLRs and bought a Sony F35. :)

Maybe in photo shooting there's no comparison. But video shooting you're absolutely correct. Nikon has very nice colors. I have my eyeS on these 2 cameras.

DOES THE D600 HAVE AUTOFOCUS WHILE SHOOTING VIDEO???

If only I had $15,000 to spend!!

"full-time AF with face-priority and subject tracking" If I'm reading it right it looks like it does.
