D600: HDMI out

Do you mean that the D600 works the same as the D5100 in Live View mode? On the D5100, you must set your aperture before entering Live View, and you are then unable to set shutter speed manually. The way to work with this on the D5100 is to shoot in Aperture Priority mode, preset your shutter speed to 1/60 sec (or 1/50 in PAL regions), and use auto-ISO to set your exposure via the light meter. You can then make fine adjustments with the Exposure Compensation button. Once you get used to the semi-manual controls, it's actually quite convenient and compensates for the lack of a Live View histogram.

The d600 is better and worse than this. For one thing, I cannot get a light meter on the screen while recording. However, in manual mode everything is manual and adjustable EXCEPT aperture, unless you have a lens with manual aperture control.

Yes, but without a live histogram or light meter, how can you accurately set a manual exposure?

Take a photo, look at your histo. It's not perfect, but before Magic Lantern I had to do that with a 5D mk2.

Alternatively, get a monitor that can display a waveform.

Good question. I don't know :)

I explained my current method on another thread, but I'm still experimenting. I go out of live view, hit INFO. Now you can see the meter (but no image). I make my adjustments and then go back into live view. Then I just use my eye and decide if I'm happy with the result. If not, I adjust.

That all makes sense, just wanted to confirm there wasn't something I was missing about setting manual exposure on Nikon cameras. Ironically - and I'm not complaining - I've found that Nikon's auto-ISO and min/max shutter speed presets make it the ideal auto-exposure DSLR, used in Aperture Priority mode. The D5100's auto-focus grid, auto white balance, and matrix metering are so quick and reliable that I rarely feel a need to second guess its automatic settings. As a result, I don't mind not having a histogram or manual controls, and I can quickly confirm that the settings the camera has chosen are the ones I want. By contrast, the Panasonic GH2 works very well in manual mode, far more reliably than in its auto-exposure modes.

This HDMI issue together with no aperture adjustment while in live view are serious deal breakers. I really hope Nikon (can) fix this in firmware, and the most important thing is that we, potential buyers, really let them know.

So I really hope as many as possible can give this message to Nikon.

I'm not sure which communication channel would be the best. Any advice on that??

I'm currently chatting to Nikon support in the UK. They have asked to see an example of the black box edging.

I was hoping to use the D600 on my polecam rig, converting the HDMI output to HD-SDI with a Blackmagic mini converter and then recording to my Flash XDR. With the black box problem this is pointless/useless. I really do hope its just an oversight firmware issue and not a deliberate thing from Nikon.

Nikon have come back to me now:

"Thank you very much for providing me with a sample video. I have reported this issue to our manufacturing and design department in Japan. They are planning on addressing the issue shortly but I do not have a guaranteed time frame to offer you at the moment.

I would suspect that this will most likely be through a firmware update. As you have your D600 registered to your account you will be notified of future updates for this camera.

Once again I would like to thank you for brining this to our attention. Your feedback is greatly appreciated."

So it sounds like they plan on fixing it, which is great to hear. It just can't happen soon enough for me.

That's good news. Thanks for keeping us posted.

Is it an Atomos Ninja thing?
I have a Camax H056 Monitor and the D600 fills the screen completely before and during recording to a card.

If Nikon is going to issue a firmware fix, we should ask for full manual control as well.

I have done all the video checks. I'm actually a TV cameraman / engineer. I can assure you, the D600 is outputting a cropped HDMI output. It has a 5% black box edge around the output.
