D600 Footage Test

Yeah, I always set white balance manually and the skin tones definitely bias towards red/orange.

As for the lack of a histogram, I usually just take a still photo while in movie mode and just look at the histogram while reviewing it.

Did another test. The D600 certainly looks a bit better at thinner dof, however, notice the shot where she starts the stopwatch - the out of focus areas have terrible posterization. I thought this was vimeo, but looking at my files out of camera, it's just as bad. Maybe one needs to avoid dark color gradients in out of focus areas...

What ISO was that shot at? I think these newer cameras shoot such a clean image that the weaknesses of their codecs really get exposed. 1-2 additional stops of ISO (and the appropriate amount of ND to maintain your DOF) might add enough noise to the image to prevent that posterization.

Alternatively, I think you can add some masks to those areas and add some blur to smooth it out.

If I'm not mistaken, the posterized shot was in fact at iso 100. (I wish these video clips had metadata) That's frustrating you have to actually introduce noise to avoid posterization, but I guess it's a pick your poison situation.

I thought I'd post a more serious D600 test. It was going to be a short film, but I didn't have enough time to shoot it, so just strung it together as best I could, so don't worry about it not making any sense.

I ended up getting rid of the D600 and going for the D800. I'm going to have to say that the D800 is way superior as a movie making tool, and finally aliasing is so much more predictable and easy to control. And having the live histogram on the D800 is really a godsend.

Thats exactly what im going for aswell, the d600 is good but just falls short on many small things (and the moire being a big thing). In Sweden you cant get any video-equipment like a loupe for the d600 (atleast a cheap one), and since its mechanically impossible to change aperture without the mirror going down we wont see any mosaic for it I would think.
