D5200 Anyone got it ???

Hey Squig! I'm so excited that you got your cam. I can't wait to see what your findings are. :)

ps...I'm sure I'm not that only one. Cheers Buddy!

Well Kholi is having a love affair with an Australian bod (I've been there, it's a world of pain) so someone has to do it. I'll accept payment in beer or buds.

I'm running some lens cap tests now vs the 5D MKIII. The D5200 is set to standard with the contrast dialled right down, NR off, and AdobeRGB. I'm pushing the exposure +3 stops in post to show the noise.

100, 400, and 800 are what I regard as the clean ISOs. The white balance setting affects the noise level on the D5200 which doesn't appear to be the case with the 5D. Interestingly the picture profiles appear to have less effect on the noise than the white balance settings.

@ 100ISO here's how the D5200 white balance settings rate from least to most noise-

fluoro k?
incandescent 2700k (has some filmlike flicker)
flash 5400k
direct sunlight 5200k

Those kelvin numbers could be wrong, I got them from ??? can't remember where.

These are just my preliminary findings and I'll correct/update them as I learn more. I won't post up any charts yet because I might find something that skews my tests. Once I get through these noise tests I'll go out and shoot something for everyone to check out.

And guess what, @ 100ISO (fluoro) the D5200 is cleaner than the 5D MKIII is at any ISO! The 5D is cleaner at high ISOs but there's a lot of noise reduction going on.

No unboxing video?!?! Can't be! LOL! To make it feel a bit bigger get a battery pack. That's what I did with the d5100.

Bad idea, raises the lens height above the mount and induces more rolling shutter. Can't beat the laws of physics.

Unboxing vid! You want a cat vid too? lol.

If it will make you feel better when I get done actually filming and testing stuff with the camera I can put it in the box and record myself unboxing it :)

Nope, we wanted to see Squig unboxing it! Lol!

Yeah! Cat video is a must! And trees with lots of leaves! Flowers, ducks in the water! The only way to test a new cam! Oh, I forgot dogs!

You won't see me in front of a camera until I collect my Palme d'Or.

Ducks, puppies, and monkeys I can do.

Running the flaat 10 and 11 noise tests now.

Help! I think I might have made an amazing discovery but I need to do a 50i to 25p reverse telecine. I'm on a mac, I've got fcpx, premiere, after effects, and fcstudio 7 (not installed). I tried compressor but it looks like shi#. I'm googling but I need some expert advice. Thanks.

I hooked up my d5200 to a PC via USB and I can confirm that "Camera Control 2" works and controls all the functions on the d5200. You do loose the on camera LCD in live view, the image is displayed on your PC screen with a slight lag but its somewhat useable. You can not use the external HDMI output when connected via USB. Which means you can not use an external EVF or HDMI recorder at the same time.

Well don't keep us in suspense! What, what, what? Sorry I don't know anything about reverse telecline, but Edius should be able to interpret as needed. I was just on my way to pick up a D5200 and I need incentive! :)

I would do a search on After Effects deinterlacing. I haven't use AE for this, but I have used it to remove a pulldown and it did a very good job, FWICT.

Lpowell, this is great news! Thanks for a fantastic project. It seems that the new crop of Nikon DSLRs hold great promise on the video side. Do you think that eventually a hack can be developed, by Vitaly maybe, to improve on many of the Nikon's video features? Let's hope so! Thanks for your great work. I have the D5100 but don't use it for video. I am waiting for the D7100 to see how it turns out. Then decide between it and the D5200 to purchase. Thanks again.

Well don't keep us in suspense! What, what, what?

I was testing for 18 hours straight yesterday and I'm still perplexed. Maybe I'm just a bit slow. When I know for sure you guys will be the first to know.

A heads up on a few things.

The rolling shutter recorded to the card doesn't look bad at all. I shot handheld with a 35mm lens and there was no jello, it's not anything like a D90. I'll do some proper tests vs the MKIII.

Noise reduction does affect the video but it doesn't reduce the noise, it just muddies it.

The image on the LCD looks like it's RAW! Maybe that explains why it's a jellovision.

Stay tuned.

Good stuff LP.

You're welcome.

Still got some converter issues but I'm getting there. I'm having more camera issues at the moment. :furious3::badputer::nads:
It's a bit like playing with a rubiks cube blindfolded.

The colour temps I listed earlier are not accurate, the flash setting is warm not 5400k.

So... how do I set up the camera to output a clean HDMI 1080p output?

At this point as far as I know you can't but I haven't tried it myself. I'm told it's only outputting 60i over HDMI.

I discovered that there's very little high ISO noise if you shoot 60i but I'm yet to find a method of cleanly restoring it to it's 24p goodness and the 60i is slightly cropped. Do you have a ninja you can test the 60i to 24p pulldown with?

I noticed AbobeRGB is less saturated than sRGB.

Ok I think I've got the 60i figured out. I was dropping the 60i H.264 mov into a 24p fcpx timeline and it looked like shi# I had to do a prores transcode first (duh) and now it's displaying as progressive in the timeline with minimal artifacts.

24p has very little noise @ 100, 400, and 800 ISO. 60i is good @ 1600 ISO and even higher. These are my lens cap test findings, I still have to do some more real world tests to confirm.
