D5200 Anyone got it ???

I really hope it doesn't moire, the feature set is great. That LCD should look great through a z-finder. All Nikon has to do is tune out the fixed pattern noise and reduce the rolling shutter and it would be the ultimate cine DSLR.

The thing with aliasing and moire is that they can chew up codec bandwidth. FWIW, what I find intriguing with the D7100 is the AF system. If it can credibly focus track in video mode, that would certainly be worth the price premium, IMHO. Also, if it can do 24P (not PsF) over the HDMI, then you can use a Hyperdeck and not have to worry about the pulldown.

Where can I find a hi rez test chart, plese?

The expensive way is to go to BH and buy one. The cheap way is to print one. I got a couple of them printed at 70x50cm (that's 28"x20" for you 19th century people) and they're *nearly* good enough for 4K, not quite there, but definitely good enough for 1080p. PM with an email address if you wish.

So... D5200 for $800, or D7100 for $1200?

In principle, image quality should be the same. Unless they corrected some issues with the D7100, but given how much time they had since the D5200 release, I doubt it.

I'm guessing Squig is going to take another while to get his camera. Anyone with a D5200 and some time to run some tests? I still don't know how much DR this little toy has, this is unacceptable! :)

On the Nikon site they actually mention uncompressed HDMI out on the D7100 page, they don't mention it on the D5200 page so lets hope that means no pulldown too.

It was a bit of a nightmare transaction and the seller had a history of missed delivery ETAs so I pulled the plug. I'm still debating whether to get a D5200, I really like the feature set of the D7100 but the naked sensor scares me... I'm not going back to eyebrow ants just for a few lines of resolution.

We don't know for sure if it is the Toshiba sensor, the DXOmark score or someone ripping one open will confirm that.

You could ask Andrew Reid to run the tests, I'm sure he'd like the scoop on the DR.

Let's hope this doesn't mean it has a balck border like the D600 does:

'*When recording a movie through an HDMI interface, the
output image may be smaller than the value set with the "image size/frame rate"
menu.'

What's the record-time limit of the D5200? I've seen conflicting reports. Also: if recording via HDMI to an external deck, I assume the record time limit goes away? That is, assuming the camera battery lasts, it doesn't switch to power-save mode (ie. 'off'), and the sensor doesn't overheat.

As for the 5200/7100 debate: dang, that's hard. Weather sealing vs. articulated screen, headphone jack or ... not, Kelvin-based white balance or... not. Fingers crossed the images from the two are close, in which case the only correct answer to "D5200 or D7100?" is "both!" Deeply annoying they have dissimilar batteries, mind.

Would of gotten the d7100 but I just can't afford it and went with d5200 and I'm enjoying it. Quick question though as we all seem to be saying that shooting flat with the d5200 creates a lot of noise, in that case what would you recommend for a picture profile and what settings

Additional features of the D7x00 cameras that make them well-suited for use with vintage Nikon lenses:

* Internal focus motor supports auto-focus on AF-D as well as AF-S lenses.
* Lever on lens mount tracks lens aperture ring position, enabling light metering for AI-S lenses.
* Lens registration list allows you to manually enter lens aperture data for up to nine AI-S lenses.
* Focus trim settings allow you to fine-tune viewfinder focus calibration for each lens.

Depends how deep you dig into the shadows. In daylight your exposure is mostly going to be in the mids and they are really nice and clean on the D5200.

I like the Slashcam test, and have been in touch they are friends and just down the road from me in Berlin. Rudi seems to like the camera. It does go very flat with the built in profiles.

I am going to test dynamic range in daylight as find the flat profile too noisy in low light to be useable.

Yeah I was messing around with neutral with contrast at -3 and it was noisy at 1000 iso but the noise was really eaisy to denoise and the shadows could be brought up with not so much noise as something from my T2I. Going to try testing out flaat if possible saturday.

Also what do you have your noise reduction set to in camera? Just noticed it had this feature called High ISO NR with a low, normal, high, and off option. What is the best to set it to and does it affect video mode?

Yes would be nice to see some low ISO daylight contarsty seen to see the dynamic range. The D800 from samuel test and the bbc test is near to 12 stop of DR. So it would be nice to know if it comes close to that.

I think my D90 had more range than the 5D. I reckon the D5200 has 12 stops in it with the right profile. Hopefully we'll have some test results next week.
