D400 just a rumor

bs. the lack of manual control is a much bigger issue. the image quality isn't great but it's enough for many purposes, while the lack of manual control is starting to become a dealbraker.

(also, it's not just the bitrate, the image quality is already limited by the sampling and the processing)

People sell their D90's and pony up the $1500+ premium to get into the 5D knowing both cameras have the same issues with manual control (or they did). They're willing to forgo 24p in favor of 30p, they're willing to wait for back ordered cameras and batteries and spend a little more on CF cards so there must be a reason right? That tells me the larger problem isn't manual control.

Sure there are other things that go into the image quality of the D90 than just bitrate but I'd love to see what would happen if you double it. Many of the complaints I have with the D90 surround the terrible macroblocking and noise, that's why I want a higher bitrate, maybe you're seeing something else.

Here's a quote from a source at Canonrumors.com about the 5DM2 and 60D features. At the end he adds that Nikon is also adding "most of the same features" to their cameras. So maybe there's hope for Nikon owners yet.

"The 5D MarkII will have 24p, it is already in a firmware running in testing. It was not released due to time but it was planned to be released with the manual control. This is not as easy as some people tend to believe. The codec data rate has 6 frames of spare bandwidth and the file size was still the same as the 30p in the cam I tested. They have to re-code the compression routine in order to run at full speed and not waste file size. This has introduced some problems in stability because the chip can only handle 30p natively and this is basically a hack. No Audio control planned or in the firmware as of yet.
The 60D will have 720p, 1080p video modes. 30p is already in the firmware and the Mark II hack could be used in this camera easily. Much better CMOS than the 500D improved even from the 5D Mark II.
Nikon is adding most of the same features soon in their cameras, Canon just wanted to release and get the claim of being first.”

D300s http://nikonrumors.com/

still just 720p which is good enough for me. What remains to be seen is have they increased the data rate, added manual controls and fixed the overheating? And when????

given the recent discounting of the D300 and many months of rumors from various sources of a mid year release I think this is legit.

Maybe there will be both! D300s and a D400. Maybe they will improve the video.

The D300s does make sense. But only if they improve it.

If the D300s rumor is true, the video mode shouldn't be much better then the D90/D5000 being that they share the same line of sensors. The camera may launch with manual controls, and firmware upgrades for the D90/D5000, but being that Nikon reserves the "s" nomenclature for subtle upgrades I'm not getting my hopes up.

Now only if Nikon would make a D700s :P

yeah, but i thought we were talking about what those who want to keep their d90's need. no bitrate increase will ever make the d90 image on par with the 5d, it simply hasn't got the sensor nor the processing power, i can only assume that those who stick to their d90's do so because they think the image looks pretty good for the price, and at 24p.

if the 5D gives us manual controls and 24p, no brainer.

Uhhh.... the last time I checked, which was about 5 minutes ago in another thread, the 5D does not have 24p. And it doesn't look too likely that it will be hacked to that extent to be honest.

Let's hope Nikon has something coming. They could make one nice camera if they wanted too.

Definitely. And i would be on board if they could just release a manual control video cam with 1080, lowered jello and 24p. Basically the Canon Mark II with 24p.... Lets go! Not going to wait around forever mister Nikon.

Plus I need to pass my D70s on to one of my kids. The viewfinder is so small. My D200 is ok but the battery life really sucks. Time for a new camera

I really want to be able to take pictures and switch over to video if I need too.
