D300s video-in HD quality

It has a lot wrong with it but it was only intended to be a test of those focal lengths with a stabilizer and I got a bit carried away in post but it ended up looking quite filmic. The standard MKII settings cast people with an orange tone and they look like oompa loompa's, that put me off from buying it for a while. The standard D90 curve had a much nicer color tone.

it didn't look like video.

I haven't seen that Johnny Depp gangster movie but some people said it looks like video. The director said he wanted it to look like you were really there.

There are a lot of photographers out there. There are a lot of YouTube video makers out there. Not as many indie filmmakers.
you've totally misunderstood the point. video is not primarily there to extend the market, it's there to meet the demands of an already existing one. people want video, "indie filmmakers" or not.

No I don't think I did. Nikons main market is photography. It is not video, it is not printers etc.
They are going to make film cameras first. The add on of video is going to be a nice plus and at some point they will have it all right. I think they are pretty close. The last video from the D300s looks great. If they can get a 24p, 1080p with no jello and better controls it will blow away canon and everyone else away.
I would almost buy the D300s but I don't need anything right away so I'll wait.

Bingo!!! Unless Canon and/or a few others beats them to it. You do seem to recognize some of the shortcomings being discussed. They also need to beat the 5 minute maximum recording time (only because I'm a vidiot customer and I really really really want that).

I would like to see more than 5 minutes too. I have said that. On the other thread it was just discussed putting 30p into a 24p timeline. It is not good. I'd say Canon doesn't get it either. Why the 30P?

There are none of them that have it all right yet. It is early in the game.

But how big is this marketshare of people that will be blown away, and make them choose a nikon over a canon for the video?

I want it just as bad as others do in this forum. But how big are we in the grand scheme of selling photography cameras? (it would be interesting to hear an answer form a Nikon rep talking straight, rather than somebody who is desperate for better video. lol)

It always brings me back to reality when I visit a Nikon forum at other sites that cater to photography. There is virtually nobody talking about wanting better video. I actually think that the marketshare of people who curse the video integration is larger than the ones who want more.

If you go to Nikonrumors and look at that poll they just held. Manual controls were less desired than autofocus for video, and I believe it was the least important feature selected.

Don't technology companies usually integrate their consumer audience that is screaming the loudest for said changes? Ours is a pretty dull roar in the grand scheme of things.

Despite reality, I still hold out hope, but I have to add patience to that formula if I am to stay sane.

I don't know but I guess the R & D for these cameras cost a lot of money. You sell some of the stuff to pay for more R & D to make the next camera better. Then at some point in the chain the camera that you want comes along and you buy it. The DVX100 was groundbreaking when it came out right? But it still had problems and later the DVX100b came out. They let a lot of them get sold before they fix the problems.
If I could get video like Nikon is showing with the D300s with no extra work in post to get rid of jello and more than 5 min record time I'd be pretty happy. I would like good auto focus and good manual controls. But I don't want to spend over $2,500 either so I might be out of luck for awhile.

This is because the group you are talking about is a bunch of photographers and folks dabbling in video. They don't want more because they don't need more. And if they do want more they don't really know what they want.

You cant ask the people who walk to work if a new gas tax was fair.

You are missing my point.

The reason that they listen to that group is because they are the ones who are buying their merchandise the absolute majority of the time.

I just think that if they our going to cater to us, development will be reflected by how desired the product is.

If this is really a raw stil from the video then i'm VERY impressed. Now let's just see how much jello it has and how difficult it is to get manual controls.

there is a download link by the end of that webpage,it's JAPANESE,so maybe some of you just missed it.from the raw avi i downloaded,it's much better than d90,(136 and 137 are the download link)

What one of these reviewers need to do is put the camera in "M" mode and see if the camera uses the settings in Movie mode. I'd also love to know if the settings read-out when recording movies are accurate. The camera has not been reviewed by a filmmaker yet.

That image looks much improved. Is it raw?

Huh. Well those clips certainly do show better performance in all areas from the D300s. Dunno why that other clip looked JUST like D90 but these two clearly show an improvement over the original iteration at all levels.

STILL has more Jello, or looks like, than the GH-1 but I'm very surprised.

Nikon's people need to learn how to encode better.

It will be nice to get the D300s out in the real world to see what it does or doesn't do.

definitely less stairstepping than that other clip. maybe it was badly scaled in post? compressor tends to do that sometimes if you don't turn on frame controls.

it is possible that it has manual shutter and ISO but nikon are just too stupid to realize how important it is to us and didn't even bother to market it.
