D300s Jello on youtube

pretty much the same? Better? Really hard to judge with video of a cow heads with flies buzzing around.
But as far a cow's heads go it wasn't that bad!!!

Buying a Nikon DSLR for video last year at this time was a fun test. Everyone was hoping for a firmware update or a hack to enable manual control. Unfortunately, that never came, and will never come. I would assume the same for the D300s. In fact if you are buying a Nikon for the video function, you might as well buy the D5000 because it shoots video exactly the same as the D90 and the D300s. I'm sure the D300s will overheat as much as the D90 as well. I've had the D90 overheat every single time I've tried to use it professionally. The only reason to get a Nikon DSLR for video is for 24p. The Mk2, GH1, T1i, and the K7 all blow away every other aspect of the nikon video except for the 24p. It's sad really, if DMovie just had manual control it would at least be predictable.

The d300s has less jello and a cleaner image than the d5000. This is obvious from the videos posted.

As far as I have seen, there have been zero reports on the rate of overheating in comparison to the D90.

Sorry guys - I feel like I missed something -

Does the d300s have MANUAL CONTROL??

I just watched a video of guy testing it in a store, and during the video he put the d300s into Aperture Priority mode... I'm assuming this means it's controllable in that mode at least...

do you have a link? I know AF works.. slowly... but I have not seen any other tests showing any kind of manual control at all.

You have manual aperture control, which basically translates to manual DOF control. ISO and shutterspeed is still automattic, so stoping down the aperture does not control exposure.

Maybe video on this camera is different but if you change the aperture it changes the shutter too? Aperture Priority. You change the aperture and the camera picks the shutter speed. So really can't you change the exposure that way? F2.8 lets a lot more light in than F16 does.

It's the same as d90....aperture priority is useless when shutter speed and gain make their own choices.

You can probably change the exposure to a certain degree if you aim to blow out or underexpose in certain situations but I wouldn''t call that manual exposure control.

f2.8 - f16 is five stops, iso 100 - 3200 is also five stops, so f2.8 at iso100 would give aprox. the same exposure as f16 at 3200 (allthough with a vast increase in DOF and lot more noise.) Of course then there is the automatic shutterspeed on top of that.

Yeah, those interested in buying, would be best served if they just ignored "aperture control". I have this same function on the D90, and wouldn't ever use it. It is basically worthless.

No D300s at the local Best Buy. I did mess around with the D5000. No big deal there. I picked up a CanonD50. Very fast auto focus.

You bought the 50d? Hmmm... The 7D will be announced tomorrow, and rumours are it's 24p/25p/30p full HD. Perhaps you should hold out a little longer if you are going to switch to Canon.

No I didn't buy one,,,,,,I picked one up like, I picked it up it the store and was holding it in my hands trying it out. Sorry.

Yes I know a new one is coming out. Besides I have thousands in Nikon lenses not going to pick up a Canon just yet!!

You might be more tempted to pick one up now:

I will say that the Nikon 24p still to my eye looks more filmic than does the Canon samples in the link above. If only Nikon could get their stuff together on this.

Ok. I really like Nikon, but this camera looks great (just looking at the specs). I might be switching over. I think it´s a d300s-killer at that price (pretty much the same as d300s). To bad on all my great Nikkor lenses though.

Hey sorry to hear you're changing over knastra. Canon sounds like the total Nikon beater.

Now, what Nikkor lenses do you have and how much do you want for them?

$1900 with a lens kit. It all sounds good. But does the Nikon still look better? Is there some weird problem in the D7?
But since I have about $2,000 to spend right now I think it will be worth the wait to see what both cameras do.

Zim, from reading your posts, you're covered in Nikon glass. Unless a different brand camera ships with the ghost of Bresson installed, it wouldn't be wise financially to change brands now.

and I don't want to change brands either. Sounds like a nice camera but who knows what problem it might have and still the Nikon might look better. A big reason I plan on getting a new camera is for photography.

I'm just going to wait and see. I guess
