D16 Bolex

I think the design is terrible. It's cool if you are into nostalgia but that's it...

I believe RED has it right, other then the high price I love the totally modular design. A square box with holes everywhere. Build it up however you like.

I'm hoping the 'Apertus open source cinema camera' turn out to be the poor man's RED.

The whole reason for the existence of the D16 is to get away from mediocre marketing bullet feature laden prosumer video cameras and crappy low end codecs. It is intentionally not another me too mass market consumer camera.

Which is why if people ever get their camera, they will play with it for a bit, then relegate it to the closet.

At least the BMCC has a ProRes/DNxHD option, which I suspect will end up being what a lot of people shoot with on that camera.

The interesting thing to me, if I am to go by others description of working with raw, is that Raw sort of goes against some of the statements made by the developers - Paraphrasing: We wanted a camera that would just get out of the way and let people shoot.
Seems to me that on the front end that goal is met: Simple menu system, not a lot to do to set it up.
But....then you have to deal with off loading huge files, and be a real task master in front of your work station bringing the footage to "life". Those who are experienced and have the right tools no doubt want exactly that, and that is the appeal for them. I can't help but thinking that Gary is right in that an option for a really good internal codec would have been a wise addition for many other users....so they could shoot, edit in a quick great looking format....done.
I understand the developers not wanting to use AVCHD, or other highly compressed formats, those would go against the "spirit" of such a camera. ProRes/DNxHD or similar would not IMO...they would actually be a great choice for many. I have to say the camera would appeal to me more as well because I know nothing of raw workflow.
Nothing exotic...just simple edit friendly 4:2:2.
