General D Focus or Proaim Follow Focus?

Hi dvx community.

Long time reader, first time poster. I have gained much knowledge from the active members of this forum, so thanks for doing what you do. I have tested many techniques mentioned in this forum and purchased some items from the advice given. I too plan to contribute in the future, but at this stage I'm still learning quite a bit and need a bit of help (and as a result don't have anything to contribute... yet!).

So I am a 7D owner and a very happy one at that. I am about to start working on some videos for an music website of which, the content will be mainly stationary interviews and conversations with a bit of run and gun stuff at shows etc.

While I have my audio, tripod and shoulder rig sorted, I'm now looking to purchase a follow focus. I've tried a few alternative/DIY FF systems with limited success, so I'm now looking for a more permanent solution. I'm also trying to keep the costs down as much as possible. As such my research has narrowed it down to two options, the DFocus V3 or the Proaim FF 125:
Dfocus
Proaim

Both go for pretty much the same price (US $125-150) and have similar features, of which a rail mounted system is what I require.

I was wondering if there were any users of either of these systems that would be willing to give their thoughts on how their experiences with either/ both products were, and whether they would endorse purchasing it.

Cheers

I own the DFocus V3 with the DMount. I've put it through three shoots since I got it a couple weeks ago, and I've found it works great. I am very happy, and for the money, it is a bargain.

I recommend getting the DMount so you can use the FF at any time, whether the camera is on your rig or not. I bought the DMount because my DIY rig would not allow the FF to be mounted on to the rails and still function properly.

Place your order asap, though, because wait times can be 3-4 weeks.

Thanks jscottprice,

My preference is with the dfocus, just because of the build quality and the option for a non-rail mount even though I don't neccessarily need it.

Glad to hear you like it.

been using my dfocus for over a year now, hasn't failed me yet. i feel comfortable recommending it for sure!

Proaim can be OK if you want to do a lot of work to get them working properly, needless to say, pass on Proaim...
