C300: Custom Picture

I'm looking at the custom picture setup. Will do some test tomorrow. any feedback or thoughts about using Cine, C Log or? New camera (used) so learning each step as I go.

I shoot mostly with scene files or "burned-in" looks as some refer to them. There are two clients that I shoot for that each has their own individual look(scene files) that they created that is used for each one, respectively. Otherwise, when I shoot on my 300, I generally use EOS Standard or another that is similar, but just a little bit "laid back", in comparison(I can't remember the name right now). I like the contrasty look, it my personal taste and suits my lighting style and makes my job easier. 99% of the time, if I'm shooting with that camera, it's in a lit sit-down situation and shooting LOG or a flatter more neutral profile would make it harder for me and I'd be fighting against the camera to get what I want.

100% of my work is handed off and most of it needs to be "edit ready" with no grading or color correction(or VERY little). Basically like the 'good ole days', ready to air, as-is, right out of the camera.

It's too bad more camera manufacturers don't do what Blackmagic or even Magic Lantern offers: The ability to monitor with one lut, but record in another. I briefly shot on the A7s when it came out and found that trying to light while in SLOG was a total nightmare. I would of thought this would be a standard feature or option by now.

The a7SII received the 'Display Assist Function' aka ITU709 gamma when shooting S-Log2/3.

I don't think anyone ever looks at LOG and tries to light it...that sounds difficult, haha. Most productions use monitors/recorders with LUTs you're able to load in if your camera can't.

There may have been some misunderstanding regarding my post. I do not need to monitor and shoot with different LUT's. 100% of my footage is handed over and the vast majority will be used "as-is"(un-graded) and recording in a profile/scene file/lut that tries to give you a more neutral, flatter more "open" look(not talking about log) is counter to the look I'm generally going for.

I do shoot slog and even RAW sometimes on my 55, but I don't think I've ever shot log on my 300.

I always shoot in C-log in my C300 Mark I. Wildlife and doc situations are unpredictable. And clients specify c-log. However one client had not specified and I made the mistake of shooting in c-log and the client wanted ProRes. I spent my time in converting to ProRes and sending it. Lesson learnt. Always check with client.

These days FCPX also recognises clog. However, I prefer to switch it off and do my simple tweakings. If you hardly have time to convert and if you have the lighting to your satisfaction then widedr may also be a better bet.

Also check some of the sticky threads and in this forum you will find custom lut settings liked by members.

Thanks everybody. Can any of you post a few clips that you shot? Thanks

Not a clip, but a screen grab. I actually posted this before on a lens discussion thread, but can't remember where to link to, so I'll repost the grab.

Scene File: EOS Standard
Camera: Preset 3200K
Lens: CN-E 135
Lighting: Tungsten(true tungsten, not 3200k LED's or Flo's)

For some reason, the image is appearing noticeably darker here on DVX than it actually is.
