Custom picture setting

Has anyone tried to set up a picture profile from a camera like an XHA1 and use it on a xf300 or 305? The chips may be similar enough to give similar results.

The chips are very, very different in the two cameras. Also, the XF series has many more adjustable CP variables than the XH series has.

I find I'm taking a much different approach in my CP creations for the XF300 than any of the XHA1 presets to take advantage of the increased information and color space in the codec.

Granted, the inherent differences with their CCD & CMOS sensors and honestly, i have ever worked with the XHA1 or seen its preset menus. I was more referring to, i guess, manufacturer preferences. I imagine, i would be closer to a certain look from a profile set up on a Canon camera than , say the EX3.

I know its all testing but i would like to see a profile, both visually and the settings used, as a benchmark starting out. So far i have been shooting with the profiles off and capturing incredible footage. Now, I 'm looking to create some very stylized profiles for work coming up. I'd be interested if anyone cares to share their findings and insights either on or off-list.

This is an amazing camera series and I am surprised that there isn't more chatter about it.

If this is interesting to you at all, here's a zip file with 6 presets that I've been working with:

http://twelio.com/imtx9w

and a description of the CP's:

CP1: Tru Vid - a video gamma profile with good color accuracy
CP2: XF Mojo - a nice subtle film-look with accurate colors and a pleasing gamma (This is currently my favorite preset - I use it most of the time)
CP3: XF Film - I like this for shooting dramatic narrative, it's the most film-like of my CP's
CP4: XF Film+ - at the expense of resolution, I use this to shoot at +12db to +18db (above that, I find the auto NR does a better job).
CP5: XF Mojo+ - same as above, but with a different gamma. I usually use it with +9db to +12db
CP6: Lo Mojo - for shooting above +12db, at the expense of resolution. Useful especially if I know I'll finish @ 720 or SD

A lot of the reason you don't hear so much chatter about these cameras is really due to it's price and sensor size. Cheap video-enabled DSLR's and the upcoming large-sensor digital cinema cameras are the sexy items to discuss these days. But I promise you, these cameras are seeing a tremendous amount of professional field work, both with independent videographers and on broadcast productions - it's happening quite a bit, actually. The XF codec fits very neatly in a lot of established post workflows, and the quality speaks for itself. A lot of pro's are too busy working to chatter online about cameras. I've had my XF300 since July and it's already paid for itself a few times over.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your settings. I look forward to experimenting with the settings.

I do agree with your points about the camera, I needed a camera for a job that rental would be out of the question and decided on the xf300 (the 305 wasn't available in time) that was mid August and it's paid for itself already. The only issue I have is hand holding it all day. The stabilization works well but definitely some sort of body rig is in order, like the Cinevate system.
